I know I wanted it to do with social media because social media is a popular part of our society today. Many people from all around use social media to communicate. I decided to narrow the wide-ranging topic social media to communications and far along to a more focus topic of texting a form of messaging. After researching I choose to do texting and its impact on college students because as a college student texting is an everyday task. For college students, text messaging remains the most current way of communicating and many students view it as …show more content…
I’m not good at face to face interactions so, so texting has always been a go to method of communication for me. It is an informal way of communicating that is good for those who are socially awkward and shy.It also a good way to communicate if you want to avoid dealing with the feelings of others. I believed that it would be a good topic to research simply because of the different sides to the topic. What kind of negative impact does texting has on college students? I choose to do the negative side of this topic because there is a lot to learn. Texting messaging has downsides to it; downsides that people probably do not notice. My research question is worthy pursuing further because as a college student I experience many of the effects of texting as my preferred method of communication. Also, I believe many individuals that also communicate through social media or texting will understand and will be able to relate to the effects of choosing that preferred method of communication whether it is positive or negative impact. Texting is evolving over time and becoming a very popular way of communicating so, I think it is a topic worth pursuing. Now that I have a focused researchable topic, my next steps in my project will be to start the research

You can present yourself as you wish to be 'seen '" (388). Although I do concede that if used improperly, texting can become a means of only surface communication-communication that involves no deeper meaning or, as Turkle puts it, the "staccato texts" (387) . If texting is used to meet people, to build relationships, and further them off the screen, it can become a practical tool. Wortham supports my argument that technology is beneficial if used as a tool by saying it can help "people who want to build their relationships through the screen as well as beyond it" (397). Texting and new "matching-apps," such as Tinder and Bumble, provide a means of potentially fostering new relationships with people you may otherwise never have known.…

Her research proposes that texting has minimal effect on student writing (Cullington 367). Speaking for myself, I believe that texting does have an ill correlation with writing because it allows students to be lazier and uses informal language. I am not saying that texting is a bad thing, but there should be a time when abbreviations or informal language needs to stay in the texting realm due to professionalism. As one Minnesota high school student said, “[T]here is a time and a place for everything and formal writing is not the place for communicating the way one would if he or she were texting to his or her friends” (Cullington 368). The “Textspeak”, the slang term the author uses when talking about text messages, is designed to give us a break from calling our friends and family when there is something small we need to tell them –not to carry out our minds in conversations or in our…

No matter what kind of conversations they have, they are texting, and no matter what locations they are at, they are texting as well (Cullington 361). By focusing on the convenient communication, Cullington overlooks the deeper problem of students’ school lives. Students who are texting during the time they are studying will have big impact on their attention. For instance, in order to study or write academic papers, students have to follow the train of their thought and concentrate on the plot line to process the writings. People should agree that once the plot line is interrupted, it will be not easy to pick up again.…

Texting allows a typed message to be received and transferred between cellphones. Texting has led to the down fall of face to face communication, and horrible grammar. It has allowed people to abbreviate and make their own version of the written and vocal English language for example cuz which is short for because, or LOL which is short for laugh out loud. Text messages can be interpreted in many different ways this can led to drama or problems of all sorts if it is misunderstood in the wrong way. This has changed the way we communicate with each other and the reason why are language has changed from more formal to laid back and…

I think it is safe to say that over the years texting has become more famous through the whole world as people of all races and gender now tend rely on it rather than met up. About 80% of humans cannot live without our cellphones and most of us feel like we cannot function without it. We prefer to text than met face to face. As a result, we lack social skills.…
