College Student Dropout in the United States The high rates of college student dropout are becoming a significant issue for the majority of US universities. Students drop out of higher education for many different kinds of reasons, and therefore many US colleges do research to examine about this situation. In recent, more and more people choose to work outside after they graduate from high school. As Professor Hanushek said, “As we have larger proportions attending college, we are undoubtedly dipping down further in the preparation of students for college” (Porter). The stress of attending college is not only from study, but also from living on campus. After graduating from high school, students get total independence in their life. You can find lots of fun out of class, but you shouldn’t spend too much time in having fun with your friends. You also need to control your personal independence, and make up your timetable, so that you will have enough time to study. Therefore, a successful student needs to keep a balance between study and personal life. However, it is hard for them to do that. Sometimes, students spend too much time playing with their friends, so they cannot pass the exam. Afterwards, some of them will choose to leave school, because they think it is hopeless to get the degree in time. On the other hand, people will be confused about their major. In most of cases, people choose their major before they come to school. When they study one area for a long time, might they will lose interest in their major. Even worse, they may be not sure if the current major is suitable for themselves. Many jobs just like Cosmetologist, surveyor, and industrial machine repairer. Their employers are attaching great importance to their abilities, rather than care about their degree. However, the time is changing, so the idea of people also need update. The nature of our job market is changing rapidly, but our education system fails to keep up with it. As Porter suggests, high school graduates make up just 41 percent of the U.S. Workforce, down from 72 percent forty years ago (Porter). Therefore, it is hard to find a good job if you do not have a high degree, and you cannot earn a middle-class wage without a bachelor’s or an associate’s degree. As a result, many students still work very hard, and they also like taking part in some social activities to expand their social circles. They believe that only by working hard, can they get an ideal job in the future. In conclusion, the reasons why students drop out of college are because of the high tuition costs, lack of preparedness for college and transferring to other schools. Some students leave school because they cannot bear the heavy pressure of cost. In the meantime, it takes them so much time to earn money outside of school, so they have not enough time to study. Many American high school graduates not well prepared for their further study. They come to college just want get a certificate
