Firstly, by economic pressure, Zinsser refers to the pressure about tuition. He adds “Tuition, room, and board at most private colleges now comes to at least $7,000” (20). The student does not make enough to pay for their tuition even though they have a part time job or full time. This force students to pass all their classes, so they don’t have to take it again and have to pay for it the second time. I believe a student is using economic pressure as an excuse for slacking off. If they are struggling with finances, there are others way that can help students to pay for their tuition. I have applied for some scholarships and financial aid and I received some money from it. These things help me pay for my tuition and I can continue to pursue a study that I choose. As a result, economic pressure is somewhat beneficial for students because they are paying for their own tuition, so they are forced to work harder. Secondly, by parental pressure, Zinsser refers to the pressure that the parents want the students to get good grades. …show more content…
He adds “They are caught in one of the oldest webs of love and duty and guilt” (28). Parents are brainwashing the students towards a career that they have little interest in. I think the pressure that students feel is the obligated to fulfill their parents. Since the parents are paying for the education, students do not want to disappoint their parents. For instance, they will spend more time to study for an exam because they don’t want to fail the exam or else they would feel like a failure to their parents. In this instance, students will spend more time studying for exams. I really have not felt any parental pressure because my parents are not paying for my education neither do they force me to study in a field or universities of their choice. They let me decide on what to study and for me to make my own decision so that I won’t regret later in the future. Lastly, by peer pressure and self-induced pressure, Zinsser refers to the pressure that students want to have a better grade than other students. “Part of the problem is that they do more than they are expected to do” (35). Often time students get worn out because of the pressure they put on themselves. I see peer pressure as a positive thing for me. I see it as a faster way for students to achieve their goal. For instance, last year I was a solid B student. At that time, B was perfectly fine for me. I was studying and understood most of the class lecture. However, as I started talking to some of my friends about their grades, most of them got higher grades than me. For this reason, I realize that B was not satisfying at all. I have to push myself to
