Students are not certain about which lecture material to record in there notes, while overall recording may be low, recording of main ideas may be quite high. Kiewra, Benton, and Lewis (110) found that students record 90% of the main ideas, but not more than 11% of the supporting ideas. “Given the importance of note taking . . . it is especially problematic that student notes are often incomplete and/or inadequate. Research indicates that students fail to record 40% of the important points in a typical lecture” (Hartley & Cameron 30-37; Howe, 285). The reading for this week provided us with great strategies to implement into our classrooms that are research based to help our students be successful academically. These four key tools to success are notetaking, summarizing, homework, and practicing. In Ceri Dean’s chapter 6, he discusses that teachers should teach these at the beginning of each school year to give students concrete ways for student success (Dean,2012, pp.80-98). I found several “golden nuggets” in this reading that I will implement in the new school year.…

The purpose of college, this question can be answered in many different ways. The purpose of college for some people might be to get a degree and move on into the next chapter in life, but I feel that college should be more than that. I feel that college should be a way to express yourself in ways you couldn’t before and to be able to explore new ideas and to shape yourself to become someone new. College for some people might seem like just another step in the never ending staircase of life, but to me college is more than, that it's shaping me into the person I want to become and shaping my life for what I want and who I want to be. As a young person, choosing what to study is one of the hardest decision you have to make. According to a Washington Post article, “What’s the purpose of college: A job or an education?” by Jeffrey J. Selingo, learning and getting more knowledge about the world used to be a purpose of higher education, but nowadays it switched to getting a job after graduation rather than gaining more knowledge. Education is the most important factor in order to be successful, but lots of people are in college because their parents want them to, while others think that college is the next destination they have to go through after high school. To me, college is the place that teaches us how to think, how to analyze things thoroughly and to pursue a good career…

College Preparation: Pass or Fail There has been a nationwide epidemic in education and this epidemic stems from high school and eventually into college. With as many high schools there are in the nation how many of them could attest that their majority of students are ready for college. Most high schools would say yes when in all actuality the answer should be no. This is especially true for high schools located in poor socioeconomic areas, and although they may have great graduation rates, but only half of that graduating class would be considered college ready.…
