My father is 48 and was born in California, he had a very rough childhood. His stories of his childhood have influenced me a lot. He has drank alcohol and smoked cigarettes for 30 years of his life. When he didn’t drink he was a very nice guy. When he did drink he was a jerk that nobody wanted to be around. Addictions like this can completely change people's personalities for the worse. When I was about 12 years old, my father was a severe alcoholic and a hardcore cigarette smoker. One day I remember him looking for something on the counter and I could not figure out what it was that he was trying to find. I went up and asked him, he told me he was looking for money so he could go buy some beer. Without thinking I said to my dad, “Why do you need this stuff, it turns you into a monster? My mom took him to the doctor and the nurse took him to the waiting room. He waited until the nurse came to get him. They did the standard checkups. The nurse was shocked when she heard his heart rate. She said, “Your heart is beating at at a very mixed pace .” My dad said, “ That's unusual, do you think that is the problem.” She said, “I am not for certain, but that's where we can start look first.” We waited for a long time and then the doctor came in and said, “Mr. Hibbs, we have found the problem. I’m going to diagnose you with heart failure.” Me and my family were shocked. Words could not describe the feeling of the room. “We can not cure this but, if you quit smoking cigarettes and drinking, it will help majorly. You need to change your diet and exercise time as well.” My family took in what he said and remembered it. That night my dad stayed in the hospital, he did for the next 5 days.
