College Narrative
My father is 48 and was born in California, he had a very rough childhood. His stories of his childhood have influenced me a lot. He has drank alcohol and smoked cigarettes for 30 years of his life. When he didn’t drink he was a very nice guy. When he did drink he was a jerk that nobody wanted to be around. Addictions like this can completely change people's personalities for the worse. When I was about 12 years old, my father was a severe alcoholic and a hardcore cigarette smoker. One day I remember him looking for something on the counter and I could not figure out what it was that he was trying to find. I went up and asked him, he told me he was looking for money so he could go buy some beer. Without thinking I said to my dad, “Why do you need this stuff, it turns you into a monster? He replied with, “Worry about yourself and go in your room and play xbox.” I said, “I’m not going anywhere until you

My mom took him to the doctor and the nurse took him to the waiting room. He waited until the nurse came to get him. They did the standard checkups. The nurse was shocked when she heard his heart rate. She said, “Your heart is beating at at a very mixed pace .” My dad said, “ That's unusual, do you think that is the problem.” She said, “I am not for certain, but that's where we can start look first.” We waited for a long time and then the doctor came in and said, “Mr. Hibbs, we have found the problem. I’m going to diagnose you with heart failure.” Me and my family were shocked. Words could not describe the feeling of the room. “We can not cure this but, if you quit smoking cigarettes and drinking, it will help majorly. You need to change your diet and exercise time as well.” My family took in what he said and remembered it. That night my dad stayed in the hospital, he did for the next 5 days. For lunch he ate salads and the when he was there he didn’t have any

Being the first in the family to take interest in college is already enough for everyone to push me in the direction to achieving it. I do not want to disappoint them or myself, I want to be on the graduation stage with my hand grasping that master degree. About me, others describe me as opinioned, stubborn and independent. Although I do not want to admit it, these traits all apply to me. Opinioned doesn’t sound as an appealing word to me I should say I like for people to understand my views completely also I don’t mind if someone does not agree with me, it just adds more depth to the discussion.…

Hamilton took me by surprise. I knew it was a small liberal arts college, but I had no grasp on how unique and genuine the community was. So many people said hi to my tour guide, Emily, as she showed me around -- including the line cook in the dining hall! I also heard how a student emailed 10 alumni to help her with something, and all of them replied to her. This kind of close-knit, loving family is what I want in a college experience.…

Two dozen 18 year olds sat inside a warm smelly classroom at Marshall High School. Graduation was a month away and everyone, including the teachers were ready to get out of this hell hole of a school. It was that point of the year where it wasn’t warm enough to turn the AC and not cold enough to have the heat on. Everyone in the building was sweating buckets. Walking down the halls, one could definitely tell who was wearing deodorant and who was not.…

    1) There are many examples of how alcoholism affects a person and a whole family. At one point in the story, sanders states “When father was drinking, the house, too became a minefield.” Which in fact means sanders and his siblings were scared almost to death because anything can make either his father or mother "explode" from anger. "Choose to ruin himself and punish his family," Sanders wrote which is such a powerful statement. As a kid, the only time we usually got punished is if we do something wrong or break the rules.…

To be completely frank with you, this class was a challenge to me. Although this class did have some similarities to my twelfth grade english class, the differences were unfamiliar to my sense, but I am glad I faced it in this semester. A big challenge that I had to face this semester was asking for the proper help I need to improve my writing, and participating in class. I do admit, I never truly faced the challenge of participating in class as much I expected to. Although, I did ask for help, whether asking my peers or asking you, Professor Kaiser.…

Before I start taking classes at Texas A&M University- Commerce, my writing level was at a high school level. Basically, I was taught the fundamental basic of writing and the writing process (analyzing the prompt, brainstorming, rough draft- revising and editing, and final draft) using a five-paragraph format (having an introduction, three point body paragraphs, and a conclusion). I use this process throughout of high school, and up till now in college. When I got to my senior year (12th grade), not only the writing I did was similar to college writing, but the class itself has the feeling of a college class. My 12th grade English class teacher introduces the class to Purdue OWL.…

Development Scared, nervous, and unhappy would describe how I felt about taking a college English class. English was my most dreaded subject, and always has been simply because there is not always a right answer. I like to think and view things as black and white, but English is full of digging through the grey. Never the less I walked into my first day of English 101 dreading what was to come, however I left with an open mind.…

She was friendly and approachable, which helped ease the anxiety I felt about the situation. I felt comfortable disclosing my thoughts, fears, and self-doubts with her.
