Imagine living in a world without technology, a world without cell phones or social media...pretty hard right? For millions of people cell phones are not a part of life but instead they are life itself. For college students in particular their worlds revolve around the cell phone whether it be using them for texting, social media or taking pictures… all of life is centered around the phone. College students should learn to shut off their cell phones and be able to interact with peers without technology because they are increasingly becoming more reliable to their phones and this is causing an addiction.
An addiction can be defined in multiple ways and all for different reasons. Who would have …show more content…
The daughter in the article talked about how she was able to put away her phone for an allotted amount of time and focus on her studies and extracurriculars. The mother in the article is talked about as being more addicted to her phone then her daughter. She claims it is (2018) “the last thing she touches at night and the first thing when she wakes up in the morning” (n.p.). This is SO true, especially for me, because I tend to be on my phone until I feel tired enough. Next, I usually set my alarm for the next morning and then go to bed. Next in the article, the mother talks about a safe called the Ksafe that you can put your smartphone into and turn a dial to set it to the amount of time you want to be cellphone free. In terms of technological advancements, the fact that some people may feel the need to put their phones into safes in order to not use them just reiterates how addicted we as a society are to our phones. All of the data collected throughout the various surveys and all of the articles showed how reliant college students are in terms of cell phone usage. Speaking for myself personally I think I really need to put my phone down every now and then because I let it control my life and that is not good. It is so important to foster real connections with people during this time in life because college is preparing you for the “real world”. In a survey that we did in class, which was also a study for college aged students around the country, I realized I really am moderately addicted to my phone. You don’t realize how important something is to you it’s no longer there. The study called “The World Unplugged” is a study conducted on students from around the nation and it was their reactions to being “unplugged” for twenty four hours. The results were not surprising as many felt, ironically, disconnected and alone. With that being said according to the study (n.d.) a handful of students agreed that they “were able to revert to simple pleasures” (n.p.). This sentence is SO important because that is what matters most in life. The little things not the crazy, overemphasized social media world. It is important to take a step back and focus on your life and future and not get hung up on one little moment that happened with your phone. It is important for
