College Level Writing Reflective Essay

In high school, students did not get the freedom to come up with their own ways of expressing their ideas. They were given a set of rules to follow, and it may have helped them plan and write an essay, but those who continued to follow these rules limit themselves. College, on the other hand, allows students the freedom to express their thoughts. Although they can express their ideas freely, it’s better if the writing is to the point with enough information to support it. That’s why college-level writing means to be succinct, writing less but saying more is crucial in keeping the readers’ interested. It also helps get the main ideas out quickly, yet clear enough for the audience to understand. When students think about college-level writing they start to feel a bit uneasy at first. That’s because before entering college, they’re used to the writing techniques and rules that their high school teachers taught them. College writing may seem daunting in the beginning, but once students begin to realize that they have more freedom in writing it becomes a bit easier. Throughout my high school career, I added as much padding as I could during a timed essay. I had a difficult time coming up with ideas to support my thesis. In the end, my essay didn’t have a strong foundation, and I end up with a low grade. It’s also challenging for me to plan an essay to make everything flow together. Upon entering college, I began to think critically about college-level writing. No longer having to write a timed essay, there is more time for me to focus on cutting down padding in my writing. I learned in the beginning of the course that it’s okay for the first draft to be imperfect, hence it being called a rough draft. Knowing that I can write as many drafts as I am able to go back and cut down on padding, and establish an engaging essay that is

Overall the essays that we have read this semester have been good. There are a few essays in particular that I think benefited me the most was “The Time to Act I Now” written by Al Gore, “Just Walk on By” written by Brent Staples, and the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Martin Luther King. These essays have benefited me in a numerous amount of ways in which I am going to explain how their writing styles helped me become a better writer. Staples helped me a lot in which he taught me to explain my reasoning fully so that the audience know exactly what I am talking about. Another thing that Staples taught me was to explain the setting of the story in full detail so the readers can visualize what’s actually happening in the story this…

He showed me that with every argument comes a counter argument; adding a counter argument reinforced my argument greatly. Another technique I applied to my essays with Professor Castro’s instruction was planning. In high school, planning an essay seemed like a waste of time because the assignments were always just five paragraph, five sentence essays. Since we had to write these essays in such a short amount of time for tests, I was able to produce the work the night before. On the other hand, Professor Castro has shown the divergence between high school and college; planning and editing are two essential steps in writing.…

It takes many different skills, time, and a lot of revision. High school writing is much different from college writing, and with the help from the article “What Is Academic Writing?” by L. Cyber Slang For my writing research question I will be talking about how texting and slang is affecting students writing. I gathered a lot of information from an article online by Annie Martin called "Texting Slang Creeps Into Students Writing". There has been multiple arguments about how texting affects a great amount of student's way of writing and how formal written assignments are taken too lenient, therefore students are unconsciously using slang. Instructors nationally and locally are finding that English essays with formal English can appear like a great task who tirelessly work their thumbs to send instant messages with 160-character breaking points.…

Before I start taking classes at Texas A&M University- Commerce, my writing level was at a high school level. Basically, I was taught the fundamental basic of writing and the writing process (analyzing the prompt, brainstorming, rough draft- revising and editing, and final draft) using a five-paragraph format (having an introduction, three point body paragraphs, and a conclusion). I use this process throughout of high school, and up till now in college. When I got to my senior year (12th grade), not only the writing I did was similar to college writing, but the class itself has the feeling of a college class. My 12th grade English class teacher introduces the class to Purdue OWL.…

Going from high school to college is a big jump. College professors expect the level of performance to be higher than high school teachers. In high school, teachers allow a lot of things to slide by that a college professor would not. The intensity of school work is higher and more effort is required to succeed. While reading the different chapters of Writing in College, I have learned new tips on how to write a more successful essay by learning how to not plagiarize, getting my readers hooked, and how to write a paper more effectively.…

Journal #3 One of the major differences between high school and college is my experience with writing papers. Throughout my high school career I rarely had to write papers, and when I did the teachers helped me along every step of the way - practically writing the paper for me. I was also given long periods of time to write a single paper. However, in college things are very different. Almost every week in college I am required to write papers in several classes and finish the assignments in a short period of time.…

Imagine, a college freshman is handed back their first paper, only to receive a nightmarish grade. They rack their brain for how this could happen; they had always earned exemplary grades in their high school English class, but they were unprepared for the college standards of writing. Regrettably, too many college freshmen are met with this exact dilemma. Their high school teachers do not show them how to write, but instead what to write, and leave their students completely unaware of what awaits them in college. Consequently, college freshman are vulnerable to repeating their bad habits and continuing the cycle of lower level writing.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
