College is the New High School Graduating from high school is not what it used to be. It used to be the push that leads the transition into adult hood by getting a job, purchasing a house, and starting a family. In the past, some graduates decided to attend college, while others decided to immediately start living their lives. A college degree has become the new high school diploma where a bachelor’s degree is the minimal credentials for obtaining an entry-level job. In todays world there are many reasons why a college degree has become the new high school diploma. The competitive society of getting a well paying job is a true battle. Would a job rather hire someone for a sales position from someone who has a college degree vs. someone who has limited his or her education after completion of high school? A company will take the most qualified applicant with paying them as little as possible. Matt Sigelman, CEO of Burning Glass Technologies, said the research shows that employers appear to be using a bachelor 's degree as a rough, rule-of-thumb screening system to recruit better workers. (Brooks) Known as “degree inflation,” which can be defined as a job market whereby employers require or prefer candidates who possess a college degree for jobs, which traditionally have not needed a four-year degree. (Doyle) That particular inflation of a degree becomes more prevalent in todays society where there are a surplus of candidates with college degrees, and not enough jobs to fill those degrees. Going back to the statement saying that the job market is extremely competitive today means quite a few things.
