Why College is Harming the Quality of Life for a Majority of Students Many times high school students are told that in order for them to ensure that they will improve their quality of life they have to go to college.They are told that if they do not go to college they will never be able to achieve a better life than the one they are living, they will never be able to live the “American Dream”. However, nowadays it is increasingly obvious that for a majority of students college is in fact harming their quality of life. With the rising cost of tuition, college debt, lack of preparation for college, the increase time it takes obtain a degree, job scarcity and restriction of major choosing, college has become more of a negative factor in students lives.
One way college is harming the quality of life for students is that it affects their finances negatively. In recent years the cost of college tuition has risen exponentially. Tuition went from affordable to unaffordable, unless you took out thousands of dollars in loans. As of 2015 the average cost of a private four-year college is $31,231 while the average cost of tuition for public four-year colleges are $9,139 for in-state students and $ 22,958 for out-of-state students. Even now tuition continues to rise and the more prestigious the college the more money the student and their family have to expend.
