A Worth of your time?
It’s the old same protocol; graduate from high school and go to college. One must attend a university in order to “succeed in life,” many will say. By not going to college, it will be difficult to get a job, or at least a decent job that is. But why go to college when it just generates more problems like student debts? According to Forbes, college tuition has seen an increase of about 538% since 1985. At Texas A&M University, for example, the tuition has increased 6% to freshmen entering the fall 2014 school year. Thiel, billionaire and co-founder of PayPal, argues that college is an “expensive waste of time.” The cost of college has quadrupled since the 1980s and he is now referring college as a “debt fuel luxury” meaning that it’s not something we need but it makes us look better simultaneously causing us debt. He specifies that the cost of 4 years of college has reached about of a quarter of a $1 million dollars, but the degree received at the end doesn’t guarantee a good paying job to help with debt. To him, the education system is portrayed as being “broken” to which we are learning less than what we are supposed to. One of the ways in which Thiel promotes his ideas is by taking action. He pays $100,000 for students to drop out of college and pursue their dreams. He calls this his “20 Under 20 Fellowship” where he selects 20 students each year who have willingly chosen to drop out of college or not go to college to better challenge themselves by projecting their new founded ideas. Peter Thiel does not specifically say that students shouldn’t go to college. However, he believes that you should think hard about it before deciding to go to college and to go if you actually need the credentials.
