If I Want To Go To College Essay

College has become an enigma symbolling success, greatness, accomplishment and ambition. As such it grew on me as I progressed throughout high school because instructors constantly urged students to go to college to become successful adults, who contributed towards society. Through the functionalist perspective I realized that if I did not join the others striving towards education I would be left out and lose stability in the loss of income. Furthermore, from the conflict perspective if I went to school I would be able to live exuberantly with influence on others and a lot of material resources. Lastly, from the Interactionist perspective I would belong to a small group of skilled individuals contributing to how society functions in everyday life. My decision to go to college was largely driven by my desire to fit into society. I did not wish to be the black sheep or outcast, who then struggled to make it back into society. Culture is imbedded within society because “we need culture in order to interact and survive” (pg 49). Those who have core values may see higher rates of succeeding and contributing towards society in positive ways. In fact, positive values give a creator mindset instead of painting oneself as a victim. Furthermore, I noticed that the values I gained throughout my high school career made me into who I am today. A person’s values may never change because “most remain relatively stable during any one person’s lifetime” (pg 57). One with clear goals and a determination set on graduating from college. That’s one reason why I wish to graduate, simply for the self-satisfaction of doing what I set my mind
