The right group can also help think the original idea through and offer ways around any issues that may present themselves. The media also plays a role in shaping the lives of college students. Society says that you must dress and talk a certain way in order to be considered cool or to fit in. Those who don’t meet these standards are referred to as lame and can be ostracized by others. Consider the hip-hop movement, for instance. Look at how many people have adopted the style of dress and the vocabulary of their favorite hip-hop stars without question. Music provides a powerful medium for words and phrases to be spread globally almost instantly. Some of these trends are funny and can be positive; others tend to be more negative. Self-confidence is needed in order to distinguish between negative and positive trends. In my experience, negative trends tend to be spread much more quickly than the positive trends. Think about how many people you know that have picked up smoking or excessive drinking while amongst their friends. This could be attributed to a number of factors, but the most common reasons are peer pressure, low self-esteem, and public perception. Nobody wants to be seen as the exception to the rule or boring. I’ve met plenty of people who have their lives changed forever by alcohol; one of my best friends was killed when he wrapped his car around a pole coming home from the casino one night. Another one of my friends is paralyzed from the waist down because he was hit by a drunk driver. The consequences are real, and what better way to reach a crowd than to show the effects of too much alcohol firsthand? My ultimate goal in this course is to gain more knowledge while working in small groups.
Sometimes, I have a tendency to force my opinion on others, and I don’t really take the time to listen to opposing points of view. This case study has shown me how fresh perspectives can lead to solutions that I may not have considered in the beginning. In addition, working well with others can help alleviate the pressure of depending on just one person to get everything done.
That one person could easily get burned out, but distributing the work equally ensures everyone has a role in the assignment. This also ensures everyone gets equal credit for the success of the idea. My expectations are to learn more about working in groups as well as to gain some insight into how businesses can become better as a result of group ideas. I
