College Essay Writing Process Analysis

My college essay writing process was fairly simple. I thought of possible topics over time, such as my experiences going to Colombia, baptism, my passions, etc. After reading an article on writing college essays, I began brainstorming ideas of what I could write, and it all seemed to simply flow. As I was brainstorming, I quickly wrote down all of my ideas. From this time I knew that I wanted to write about my experiences going to Colombia. After writing down my ideas and coming up with the topic, I had difficulty actually putting all of my thoughts into one flowing paper. Because of this, I put off writing until nearing the due date. One morning I listened to a podcast of an interview with an author and her writing process. She said that her first phase in writing is doing a “brain dump.” To her, this meant plugging in headphones and listening to inspiring music. This music set the mood for her to write her book, and she just let it all flow, not worrying about grammar or conventions. Inspired by her method, I tried it that night; I found a very meaningful playlist of music, plugged in my earbuds, and let it all flow onto the paper, all the while keeping my ideas from brainstorming in mind. One change I will make to my writing process in the future is just that; taking more time to develop my thought and organize an outline before jumping into the writing stage. Another change I will make to my writing process is taking a break after writing my first draft and coming back one or two days later to reread it aloud. This would help me to recognize simple spelling and grammatical errors that I miss while
