College Essay On Peer Tutoring

My life is not perfect. Over the past 17 years, I have been traumatized by family problems such as my dad’s affair, my parent’s addiction to gambling, my brother’s death, and my illness. However, I am glad that I persevered through those difficult times. During my freshmen year, I started a peer tutoring group because my friends were struggling while I was doing very well. I decided to help them because when I was growing up, my parents did not help me with my school work because they were either at work. I understand how it feels to not receive help. Overall, my peer tutoring sessions are successful because they passed their hardest class. Not only do I help my peers, but I also volunteer my former elementary school’s after school daycare. I have several responsibilities, but my main concern is the student’s education. One day, I noticed a girl struggling with reading so I helped her. Then, I realized that the girl had autism. I never gave up on her. Although it took an hour to finish a simple book, the smile on her face was worth it. …show more content…
I empathize with those who have been hospitalized for long time, especially elders who do not receive any visitors. As a teen volunteer, one of my responsibilities is to deliver a note and a flower to admitted patients. It warms my heart to see their eyes bright up when I walk in their room with a flower.
I love being involved in my community because volunteering is easy for me since it comes straight from my heart. Although I am busy with several extracurriculars, I still find a way to help others. Because of my commitment to multiple volunteer works, I have become more appreciative of my surroundings and have improved my time management. Overall, I am strong because I still managed to help others through my volunteer work while I was struggling with my own

I was raised in a loving Christian family that has contributed to my personal values of acceptance, caring, and understanding. My parents continue to be great role models in my life and show me what it means to be a servant leader to the community. My father has been a high school football coach my whole life. As a child in south Florida, I watched my father extend his hand to many young Haitian refugees fleeing an oppressive government. I have been blessed with many different opportunities in my life to experience diversity through my school, church, and work. Being a part of a church has taught me to always have open arms to anyone that may be different than myself, with that being said my church has introduced me to many different people from all different walks of life. My church also has a large congregation of the Asian culture. Through the many social events of my church I have learned a lot about the Asian culture between their family values, foods, clothing, and gender relations. Working hand and hand with them to serve others has taught me about the differences between our ways of life, but most of all has shown me the similarities between us.…

I feel that I can make a difference in each patient’s life that I encounter, it might be as small as getting a wheelchair if they seem flaccid or weak, a blanket if they are cold, something to drink or just talking to a patient to get their mind off pre-surgery. I look forward to volunteering each week. The most rewarding day by far was being able to witness a nurse giving CPR to a child choking. She saved his life.
