Identity is defined as “the fact of being who or what a person or thing is” and is determined by the characteristics and traits of a person. A person's identity comes from a variety of places and people around them. Identity is not something that stays consistent and it is can easily transform throughout one’s lifetime. This ranges from their age to their passions, and beyond. Even though I am only fifteen years of age, my identity has changed drastically throughout my life. There are numerous items that encompass my identity. These are my ethnicity, race, gender, age, interests, and more. My identity has been shaped by my home, my friends, and my education. Through my education, I have learned about my place in society and this has impacted the way I identify myself.
In elementary school, I did not take my education seriously and did not consider it a significant part of my identity. There were other activities that I deemed more important than my education. Since I started school at Beaver, I realized that my life in the future would not be focused on sports. Because of this, I began to see my education as something to take more seriously than athletics. Also, my education was starting to become larger than just inside a classroom. My education was helping me shape the expectations that I set for myself. These expectations played a substantial part in my identity and range from how I should behave to how hard I should work. Another way my education shaped my identity is with my friends. Nearly all of the friends I made have had the same care and passion for education as I do.
