College Essay On Masks

Masks I change where I’m from every time someone asks. It’s like having many different masks; I am constantly able to reinvent myself in different situations. Unlike my peers, I cannot simply state that I am from Marblehead, Massachusetts, “born and raised.” I am from a grey area, a mix of the concrete blacks and whites of places I’ve lived in, and things I’ve experienced. I never had the door frame with marks at my heights throughout the years, nor best friends that have been by my side since nursery. Instead I hold a map like a tourist in places I’m supposed to call home, introduced as the “new kid” far too many times. My childhood roots cover continents, because I don’t belong to any one place, I choose to belong to many. They say: “home …show more content…
I’ve often questioned which mask is true to me, only to realize they are all equal. At times my masks make me feel like a teenager with a fake I.D. trying to get into some exclusive club. While my Latino amigos call me “gringa” because of my perfect English and minimal time lived in Guatemala and Mexico, my American friends joke that Donald Trump will deport me at any moment, and ask if I rode a camel to school in Egypt. Other times my masks unintentionally made me feel like a snob. At eight I was unaware that riding camels by the pyramids wasn’t commonplace, and as a teenager am still shocked to find that there are people that have never flown in an …show more content…
Do they mean my mailing address, parent’s home, boarding school, hometown, storage unit, birthplace, or country lived longest? Answers to which are all different places. All of these places combine to create the facade I choose to present to the world. Like a chameleon, I can choose to blend in, or stand out, it all depends. So, where am I from, you ask? If you have time, take a seat, and I’ll introduce you to my many

Charlotte Perkins Gilman once said “What we do modifies us more than what is done to us.” A person’s identity is shaped by many factors, including location. Where you are from and where you are now, plays an integral part of your identity. Due to judgements and social status in a particular location, one’s identity can be deeply affected by location. However, the way a person responds to the negative effects of society, truly shapes their identity.…

Heritage: Our Origins Every person, family, or tribe, can trace their history back to when their ancestors were just creating things from scratch, migrating from place to place in search for resources, and coming up with new ideas that we consider ancient today. What our ancestors did is as much of importance, or maybe even more, as what we do with what they left behind. Whether it is a family tradition that has existed for hundreds of years, or customs that have evolved as time passed by, are significant. Everything that has been thought of, been done with success or failure, and created through hard work and talent, are what makes the current society we live in now.…

Contemporary Psychologist believe that people have multiple identities and different people and situations bring out different sides of a person's identity. A person tends to behave differently with an interaction with a judge in court than with a friend at the mall The interaction with a Judge would be more courtial and a person vocabulary would be more sophisticated. They would address the Judge as “Your Honor” rather than Mr. or Mrs. Their attire would be different because the person needs to present themselves in a Professional manner to impress a Judge. An interaction with a friend at the mall gives a person more freedom to speak in any manner they would like. I didn’t know my family’s history, I never had the ability to establish myself in one place because my father’s job required constant adjustments to my surroundings. However, my sophomore year I took my first college level American History course and it began opening doors I didn’t know existed. I soon realized that I may not know exactly where I come from, I may not belong to a specific state or region, but I am a part of the big picture –The United States of America.…

How the Northwest Shaped Me As of this point in my life I think I’m too far down the line of mixed cultures and beliefs that I’ll never truly know what I am or ever really will be. But if there is one thing that I know has shaped me in my life in the way of values is the Northwest. There’s no other place like here, green trees, brown dirt and bark, white snow, blue oceans, ridgid mountain tops, and the mix of cultures a place like here brings.…

To live in a brand new place and feel at home is difficult, but to do it alone is much more difficult. I wander the streets constantly trying to find something or someone that can ground me to this place that I am now living in. Walking around these cobble stone streets. I constantly look around for something that reminds me of home. I try to align something from Florence like the bittersweet smell of coffee, the egg glazed pastries and the warm smell of fresh bread to my place at home.…

These Taliban do not allow the women to go outside of their house without a large burqa covering themselves. William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet ends with the death of both Romeo and Juliet. One can tell that the mask is just simply a disguise. Then Dunbar says that the mask “shades our eyes”. One can be reminded of a saying “the eyes are the windows to the soul”. However, if the eyes are hidden and the face is completely covered one can not see how that person truly feels.…

The characteristics stylized in these masks severed as icons presenting what it meant to be a good, honorable, respectable and beautiful woman in Baule society. The large forehead and half slit eyes present the idea of modesty and wisdom. The beard like pattern indicate age in the woman. The luster of the mask is an indicator of glowing skin and good health. ´´ A mask expresses at the same time the maximum of life and the maximum of death; it partakes of the visible and of the invisible, of the apparent and absolute, ´´ said Barrault (1961: 77), however, what is a mask, what is the maximum of life, death, the invisible and visible ? To a great extent, I agree with the statement, but as Shujoy Chowdhury claimed, “behind every "Truth" there is always a "Lie". Evaluating contrasting masks like the Japanese Noh Masks, Neutral masks or African masks will give us major knowledge of what the maximum of death, life, visible, invisible, apparent and absolute is. I choose especially that three masks for the reason that in them I distinguish the two extremes (African and Japanese masks) balanced by the Neutral.…
