Insecurity: the lack of self confidence or assurance. In simpler terms, fearful or afraid of what could be, or what will be in one’s life or one’s self. This is the thing that stalks the halls of every high school, that which dwells within every acne covered, not good enough teenager, and lashes out at every unsuspecting adolescent that dares let it enter their company. An epidemic that has spread through the minds of the youth, made teens wait in hesitation, and has divided what could be from what is. The single biggest killer within teens is a silent killer. It is not drugs, alcohol, car accidents, or suicide. The leading killer is the insecurity that drives teens to these things in order to fit in, and to remain a part of the “crowd,” away …show more content…

Her family was falling apart. Everything she had ever known was ruined. Those times she spent hanging out with those so called “friends” were moments wasted with the wrong people. She let the anxiety take over her and control her actions. Kierra began to skip school because of the lack of motivation to sit in class and act like everything was fine, to her it was not fine. It was too much to handle and too much at the wrong time. Her last year of highschool, the persistent feeling of stress was overpowering. Balancing a job she worked six out of seven days a week with school, balancing her upcoming graduation, and trying to improve her GPA all at the same time took a toll on her emotions and feelings. The myth I chose was that self esteem causes major psychological problems. I was drawn to this myth because I hear a lot about the damaging effects of low self esteem, on children and adults alike. Personally I did not know any real evidence on it, simply that it was something I assumed to be true. The book used the examples of the columbine shooters, and how in the media, the most common reason given as to why to young people could do such a thing was because they were bullied, and therefore had low self esteem. In retrospect, it now seems a bit hasty to believe low self esteem could be the major cause of such a catastrophe, especially since we would probably have a lot more of these events happening if that were true.…
