For most, working for yourself and doing what you love is a big dream. No unreasonable deadlines, no one constantly on your back, and no nagging. Being your own boss means freedom especially creative freedom in a field such as freelance photography. However, people often overlook the amount of responsibility and hard work put into not only your photography projects or portfolios but into supervising your own enterprise(at best with an assistant). This goes to say that to be a freelance photographer you must work beyond capturing photos. Typically, workers in this occupation had prior experience in photography by starting as an assistant. Many have have multi-tasked as they helped already established photographers by attending school for a degree(usually an Associate Degree which takes two years to achieve), although a Bachelor’s Degree in …show more content…
These days almost everyone has an iPhone or another high quality camera phone and are constantly uploading their photos on instagram, twitter, facebook, etc. and using editing apps. This isn’t entirely a bad thing, although this holds photographers especially freelancers to a higher standard. Freelancers must keep updated with their equipment(tripods, cameras, lenses, photoshop, etc.), websites/networking profiles(best at mobile friendly), and even studios in order to thrive. Collectively this keeps this profession from being replaced or gone, but it doesn’t come cheap. At first freelance photographers starting out don’t have a lot of money and whatever money they do have goes into buying equipment, business cards, or maybe even hiring models, then later renting/buying a studio. You have to put in money before earning a sufficient amount which can take a few years and most photographers have part time jobs outside of photography.
