College Counseling Center Case Study

Abdul, a 19-year-old college student, presented to his college counseling center for help with stress and academic challenges. Since the beginning of the semester he had performed poorly on tests, assignments, and has been unable to develop effective study habits. His grades were poor and he feared that he will not be academically eligible to return next semester. The stress of his situation had led to insomnia, an inability to concentrate, and a sense of hopelessness. After getting a “D” on a particularly important economics test, he ceased going to class altogether. He called his mother to seek support and advice because he felt overwhelmed and defeated. His mother encouraged him to seek help at the college counseling center.
Abdul explained that he has always been challenged by school. He was often in trouble at school for not following instructions, not completing homework, for being restless, and not listening. He reported that he usually has trouble concentrating unless it on something he really enjoys such as sports or video games. He related that

When left unattended his behavior was often disruptive or destructive. He would race around the house shouting or jump on beds, knocking over fragile objects. He was unaware of his volume and would shout requests for a drink or a snack when his mother was on the phone, regardless of how often she would ask him to speak in a normal level. Even when he was sent to play outside, he would somehow find trouble, which resulted in damaged property and/or an angry neighbor. When he played with his friends he was bossy, continually grabbing their toys and refusing to share his own. This usually resulted in a squabble, requiring his playdates to be closely monitored by an adult. The only safe activity for Abdul was watching TV or playing video games, which he would do for
