Throughout the summer I decided that I wanted to spend most of my time volunteering at youth cheerleading camps. Not only did I get the chance to interact with younger girls and set a good role model, but I also got the chance to work with other girls my age who have talent and loves cheerleading just as much as I do! The two camps I was a part of was the Danny Lansanah Football/Cheerleading Camp and the Packers & Broncos Cheerleading Camp. Both camps were located at John Harris High School for ages 5-14 and were free with food provided. During both camps my job was to focus on the basic skills you need to learn to become a cheerleader and also make up a routine to teach the girls.…

Cheerleading has always been a very important aspect to my life. In high school our cheerleading squad had an experience that proved cheerleaders do not get the respect from other athletes that they deserve. As a cheerleading squad, we were at every football and basketball game, even the away games. We were there to show support for our fellow athletes, however when our squad was in a cheerleading competition, not one of the other athletes came in support of us. This showed the lack of respect other athletes had for our cheerleading squad.…

Though still new and misunderstood, competitive cheerleading is a sport and should be treated as one by society. It not only requires an undeniable amount of endurance and strength, but it also fits the definition of a sport perfectly. When it is considered a sport, the amount of injuries will drastically decrease, protecting the lives and bodies of our sisters, brothers, daughters and sons. Cheerleaders defy gravity and look good while doing it. Their teammates are their brothers and sisters, and their coach is their second mom or dad.…

And this is even more surprising because cheerleading accounts for sixty-five percent of all catastrophic injuries and according to the National Federation of State High School Association “only about 3 percent of the nation’s 2.9 million female high school athletes.” This may be due to the fact that unlike sports like football and soccer, cheerleading has no defensive gear to wear while engaging in the sport. Because cheerleading is so dangerous, there are lots of rules and regulations to try and protect the athletes. In competitive cheerleading, everyone must follow the USASF rulebook, and if a team does not, then they will receive a warning and if not then corrected, then they will receive a legality, which is a serious offence because if a team receives a legality that would cause a team to be disqualified from a competition.…

This weekend I had cheer practice and non-important subjects but I am only going to conclude cheer practice which I was very anxious about. Me and my team always start out with with ten laps around the gym and then warm up/stretch which to me it is very soothing and which is my favorite part. Then to follow up after that the team warms, we then do running tumbling and standing tumbling which is for example a roundoff back handsprings. I always enjoy warming up tumbling because it makes me feel joyful. Then we do a run through of the transitions and motions, then add tumbling.…

Although this is a common misconception construed through media representation like "Glee" or "90210", All-star cheer teams receive little to no recognition and are immediately grouped with high school cheer even though both sports are lacking even the most basic of similarities. High school cheer teams are best known to be their schools "pep squad" they work together as a team to preform peppy chants at games and encourage school spirit. All-star cheer teams do not cheer. Although they identify as a cheer team all-star cheer teams do not preform cheers, do not bounce around in school colors, and do not cheer as a hobby. All-star cheerleaders see cheering as a part of their own life and spend as much time possible…
