College can be an exciting experience. When I first attended college in the fall of 1993, I was elated, accepted into a private arts college and studying Art and Design. I worked a full time job and paid for college myself, which was stressful enough. I took on a full time schedule, which consisted of five classes; I quickly realized how overwhelming it was. The classes were demanding, and homework kept me up until 4 AM. I slept for three hours and then made it to my AM shift at the restaurant where I worked. Eventually after two years I could not keep up, so I dropped out of school. Many years later I am married with a mortgage, a job and a toddler and decided to head back to college. All of this responsibility together with class schedules, mounds of homework and deadlines is making me experience a déjá vu feeling. I feel completely overwhelmed, scattered and unfocused as I fit these challenges in-between temper tantrums from my toddler. How do these college kids keep up with a full time schedule, I wonder? To my surprise, someone advised me a couple of months back “just pop an Adderall it will help you focus and sail through your classes”. Adderall is a stimulant drug used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, (ADHD) and works to enhance concentration by stimulating the production of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain.
