Is racism still alive on college campuses? You might think it is not, but the reality says that it does exist in many colleges. Incidents of racism, ranging from calling name to physical abuse, have increased in the last few years. According to the Department of Education, the number of racial complaints reported on college campuses “has increased from 555 in 2009 to 939 last year” (Quijano). One of the most recent racist incidents is the racist chant that happened at the University of Oklahoma. A group of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity members sang a racist song that includes racial slurs against African Americans (Svrluga). Although, the students who led the song were expelled from the university, many people believe that it is not the end …show more content…
It is clear that racism is a serious social problem that negatively impacts individual on campus and the whole community. Racism is harmful to the mental and physical health for young people who experience it. According to Gil González, “Racism is associated with impaired psychological well-being, decreased self-esteem, and increased risk of depression”. These impacts can reduce individual’s ability to work or study, and to achieve their future goals. Moreover racism creates a society where individual don’t trust or respect each other. Therefore, everyone should play a role to help to reduce racial prejudice, and to create an environment where everyone feels safe, supported, and valued. I used authoritative to show that effects of racial discrimination.
My chosen public audience is college students. I chose this audience because many students who struggled with racist behaviors feel nervous and depressed, have trouble focusing in class and on schoolwork, and they don’t know how deal with it. To meet their needs, I tended to write my public argument in such a way that emphasized the actions that should be taken if they experience any kind of racial

A brochure is is a small single-page, two-sided, folded document designed to present an argument to readers and persuade them to one point of view ("Constructing a Brochure or Pamphlet."). It should contain the most important information about the argument, and be attractive and eye-catching so the reader is motivated to find out more. Also, the information should be written in bullet points instead of long paragraphs. To meet the conventions, I chose to use Pixlr Editor to design the layout of the brochure. Also, I used Microsoft Word to add and modify all the text and image contents, and place them in proper position. In order to emphasize the key points and grab the attention of readers, I used different fonts and colors. I also added images to emphasize my topic to meet the visual rhetoric. The limitations of my argument are a lack of detailed information about how racism can affect students, statistics about racism on college campuses, and why they have to take action against any kind of racial discrimination. I should have provided more information, but the convention of brochure limits what I could include. But since I included the main key points in my arguments in very simple and organize way, I believe that my audience would be convinced by my

Bryan Stevenson’s thesis is that there is an injustice in America’s justice system, directed not only to people of colour, but also people of poverty. The speaker states his thesis 5 minutes and 39 seconds into his presentation, after introducing himself with a story of his past proving his virtues and identity as a person of colour. By stating his thesis at this point, Mr. Stevenson was able to give himself 5 minutes to provide the audience evidence, easing them up to his thesis, yet at this point he still has enough time to elaborate further on his evidence through the rest of his talk. His self introduction gave the audience time to get to know where he is coming from, and to realize the validity of his argument, after he displayed his virtues.…

Her data collection would begin and end with Harvard’s Project Implicit Race IAT, found at https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/selectatest.html, and a survey on attitudes toward race, which can be accessed in the appendix. The text above was chosen because it spoke to the message I wanted to impose on my audience. Henry David Thoreau, argues that men should be free from government; I argue that one’s neighborhood heavily impacts the person they become; but we both argue with passion and a confident tone, making us very similar in our approach to argumentative writing. In Thoreau’s Civil Disobedience, this passage most encourages me to understand his argument, not because I agree with it, but because it most evokes logos and pathos. Each of these, I would like to evoke within my argument to create passionate, and logical arguments. Thus I speak passionately, to impose with in my writing that I genuinely care about what I write; and I speak confidently to instill a sense of credibility and certainty in my…

In chapter one titled, Jim Crow Greek Row, he focuses in on a particular incident that happened involving the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity chapter at the University of Oklahoma. Ross argues that white privilege influences America’s reactions to race incidents on college campuses and that black students are put into situations where they feel disconnected from the rest of the school, only belonging where they play sports. They are oppressed into the ghettos of our large cities, given less access to jobs and quality housing, while the kids are sent to under-resourced schools.…

“Special considerations” of affirmative action creates diversity that helps minority students. Osamudia James, a graduate from the University of Wisconsin Law school with a Master of Law (Llm) addressed the relationship between affirmative action and diversity. Her research concluded that more minorities can attend prestigious schools if race is a consideration in university admissions. The attendance of minorities in prestigious universities has had many positive effects: diversity in businesses has expanded, a Hispanic and African American middle class has materialized, more jobs in the STEM occupations are available for minorities, and more students are content with their university encounters (James, 446-447). Affirmative Action in college settings should be taken away because there are more aspects that need to be considered in the college admissions. Today in colleges, “We do treat race and ethnicity differently than region, age, special talents, and the many other considerations that enter into admission decisions” (Fullinwider). Some colleges admit students who are in a minority group just because they are a minority. Those colleges don’t care about where they are from, how they did academically, what activities they were involved in, etc. They accept them right away, not caring about the other elements.…
