Going Away To College

The difference between an option and a decision is that an option is a thing that is or may be chosen; whereas a decision is a conclusion or resolution reached after consideration. While the two are similar in a various amount of ways, they are very different. For example, a college student that pays thousands of dollars to attend a specific college made the decision to sign up for that class, but that particular person has the option on whether or not to go. By attending the class, although not mandatory, exemplifies the qualities of independence and self-discipline. From a young age through teen years, kids mostly discuss the need for freedom: freedom from parents, freedom from rules, freedom from responsibility. College holds some …show more content…
College gives you the chance to make grown-up decisions about grown-up situations without a guardian being there to help every step of the way. Going away to college to get away from home is a topic discussed often amongst kids. High school is mandatory until a certain age, college is not. The amount of freedom a student will get when going off to college may be the sense behind the mind attending. Making the class involuntary will take out that fraction of kids that go for that particular reason. Not only is this taking money away from the college, but is not even giving the child a chance to get there and realize that life is coming in like a train and will continue to travel right on through with or without the presence of a human …show more content…
College students are no longer little children, now the young adult life has taken place. Now is the time to work, child labor does not exist because this is the adult life if a person wants to make a living for his or her family, working is the only option. A few attributes obtained when attending high school would be obedience and discipline. Whereas as high school, all the information is fed and handed to students on a silver platter. Teachers are more prone to guiding their students and overseeing all their mistakes while taking the blame for their failures in class. Universities grant the opportunity for each and every student to branch out, discover, and create their own path in life. All in all, high school and college are like day and night. In the United States of America today there seems to be this expectation that one must go to college or they are considered unsuccessful and looked down upon. There are numerous reasons I believe college is not for everyone. Every person is unique, school may not be there thing, and in my opinion, there is nothing wrong with a person going directly into the work force after high school. Also college degrees are becoming worth less and less as more people attend college and end up in careers that have nothing to do with their degree or dropping out which is ultimately wasting their own and the government’s money. A majority of kids chose to go away to college for the “social aspect” so they say, which we know just means partying and drinking.…

Growing Up Unprepared What we all see as the future just slowly becomes the present before our eyes. This makes being prepared for that time to come much more important than most would think. Our parents help us grow up prepared for the little reality we know about, but what completely forces reality to be a complete surprise is school. Primarily school is supposed to set you up for college and adulthood, though nowadays schools only give you a view of reality from a middle-school standard. You follow the same set of rules from middle-school all they way until graduation, where you join college and become overwhelmed for what school has never prepared you for.…

Most days’ kids are lazy and feel as if going to an extra four years of school is not worth the effort. The schools who do have college preparedness classes make college seem like a burden and do not usually give the pros and cons of going. However schools that offer AP classes or classes that allow the student to actually travel to a college to attend a course give an idea of what it is like to attend college before the student even joins. This in turn allows the student to mentally prepare for what is to come if they were to join…

Why not just take a year off for that? Both Trudeau and Reeves believe that even though students attend class, some of them do not put in the additional time and effort to make the class beneficial for them. Some of these points being that some college students do not read outside of class to know what will be talked about or reviewed during the next class period. I believe many students who do not attend class and are tardy because they care could care less if they go to college and earn a degree. I think the majority of students are expected to go to college from their parents, relatives, and other people in their community when all they really want to do is have fun, make new friends, and make their own decisions without being told what to do. Some of these students who have been told what they can and cannot do throughout their lives are the students who rebel the most in college.…
