College Athletes Should Get Paid Essay

Patrick Courtney is finally on the field. It had been many months since his last injury, so he can’t wait. He lines up behind the quarterback and waits for his call. Courtney gets the ball and runs through the lane the offensive line creates. He thought he was home free, but a linebacker absolutely crushed him from his blind side. He tries to get up, but his right leg would not support his weight as he collapses back to the ground. Courtney is devastated that he has another injury. Later, he finds out that his scholarship was taken away while he was still unable to perform. Paying college athletes has been an argument disputed for many years. However, there has never been a college athlete that was deliberately paid by the college they play for. Without The people who actually play the sport, the school would get no money whatsoever. “The Alabama Crimson Tide sports department earned $123,769,841 in the 2008 season, but gave no money to the players” (“College Athletics Revenue…”). Alabama has so much money to use, but doesn’t give any to the people that actually earn it. “Last year, the NCAA men’s basketball tournament generated $1.15 billion in television ads” (Johnson). Remember, this $1.15 billion is just in television advertisements. March Madness gets money from other things like ticket and concession sales. Still, the players cannot earn a penny. ¨Marcus Lattimore could walk down the street and see multiple people wearing the bold number 21. Guess how much he earned from those jerseys.
