College Athletes Should Be Paid

Currently, college athletes bet on their athletic ability. They bet that their four years of hard work and no pay will guarantee them a 250 thousand dollar salary (Bleacher Report, 1). “The Northwestern University football team may have fundamentally changed college athletics: They voted on whether to unionize” (Kariam, 1). What this means, is that if the vote is in favor of unionizing; they will be considered university employees and receive pension. Why does the NCAA think that it’s okay not to pay college athletes? If the Northwestern vote passes, how much money will each player make? Also, will every player on the team make the same amount? Are player salaries going to significantly reduce player scholarships? Myself, I believe that most college athletes should be paid. Only those who start on the team and/or produce large revenue for the school (those who have replica jerseys for sale), though. Some colleges may not have the financial stability to pay each athlete that amount, which is why the NFL, NBA, etc. could help pay a percentage towards it. After all, college sports are essentially farm teams for each sport (O’Toole, Whiteside, Wieberg, 1). I believe that this proposal is completely valid, because we all know that professional sports are thriving and have more than enough money to provide $500 a month for college athletes throughout the nation. Not only would this help relieve some of the stress of being a student athlete; it would also help athletes learn money management
