21st century sports replicate a new era of how sports are perceived compared to how our fathers watched sports back in the 60’s and 70’s. Individual achievement has become a significant part in how athletes as well as how spectators view themselves in society. The social aspect of sports has gone through a wild ride full of scandals, doping, and crime. Nowadays, we as spectators are able to witness faster, stronger athletes participate in sports, but at a price.
In today’s society, we live in a prima donna world where everybody is more concerned with their image rather than how that reflects to others. There are colleges that are willing to go beyond NCAA rules to win because who wouldn’t want more boosters and alumni willing to give. There is one thing that sports in general and society have is the fact that they are greedy for money. In this materialistic world, when money promotes rule breaking, problems like we are seeing occur on a regular basis. We also have to consider the overexposure of media and being updated every minute on any athlete’s actions. Younger generations of athletes look at athlete’s actions as the typical role of an athlete. Back in early 2014, two prominent Indiana University basketball players, Yogi Ferrell and Stanford Robinson, were charged with minor consumption of an alcoholic beverage and possession of false identification (Osterman). Since the video was released, it got everyone around the country to the NFL questioning whether his actions should be banished for the season or end the rest of his NFL career for life. From the moment the video starts, there is live evidence to prove Ray Rice’s actions were unethical.
