Over the past couple of years, college athletics have gained a tremendous amount of popularity across the United States. Whether it be football, basketball, or hockey; sports bring large amounts of revenue to their respective Universities year round(Wilson). These athletes increase the popularity of the universities reputation and raise money for the universities, however, the athletes receive nothing out of it. The NCAA Regulations states, “You are not eligible for participation in a sport if after full-time collegiate enrollment you have ever taken pay, or the promise of pay, for competing in that sport” (Beaupre). Many of the top colleges around the world make most of their money though athletic events. Ticket sales, television revenue, jersey sales, promotions and many other sources of income that the athletes make go to the NCAA, the school, the coaches, the event staffs and everyone else involved in the sporting business; except for the athletes that are creating the money for the colleges. Media basketball commentator Dick Vitale suggested in one of his interview that “...the NCAA should invest $1,000,000,000 of the $6,200,000,000 it will receive to broadcast the NCAA men 's basketball tournament and pay the athletes $250 a month” (Eitzen). This shows that there is enough money within the program to let the athletes have a portion. Many people assume schools buy equipment and other things to make the athletic system better. While this is true colleges make a massive profit off the athletes, without them and an excellent program they would be decreasing their yearly income tremendously. Also they won 't be making enough money for the things they need at the school like books, classrooms, jobs and many other essential things. One argument why people believe college athletes shouldn’t get paid is because they are receiving scholarships. While it may seem odd to pay college athletes, the reality is that the athletes are necessary not only to keep competition at a steady rate between other colleges, but also encourages students to graduate and acquire their degree. These students are hard working and live very demanding lives, by paying them we would relieve some of the stress they have while leading them down the path of adulthood. Paying college athletes still allows the universities to benefit from the profit of sports, but also give a more well rounded athletic department and a better experience for students.
