Introduction:
Did you know that NCAA athletes receive free education and a scholarship worth from about $75,000 - $200,000 without paying? These athletes do not have to pay for equipment, apparel, and they can enjoy conditions normal students can not have. According to Youniversity.com and AZcentral.com,” According to the NCAA, athletic scholarships cover a median $27,923 in costs each year for players at Football Bowl Subdivision schools. And that doesn't count complimentary tickets, apparel, equipment and, most importantly, the best academic support the university can offer.” I know that some high-profile players often contribute millions of dollars to an university but these scholarships are worth from around $75,000 - $200,000 which are given to the athletes for free. There are more than 460,000 athletes that compete in 23 sports every year so if you do the math, sure a million sounds a lot but if we were to add the cost of scholarships for all these 460,000 athletes, even $4 million dollars would not even be considered close to paying all these athletes. That is just the scholarships. According to NCAA.org, apparel, equipments, etc also costs a lot. A pair of basketball shoes for an athlete costs from around $250 to even $600 from the researching in Flightclub.com. Usually the money goes to the sports program and the money would be able to fund and support the non-revenue sports such as swimming, wrestling, golf, water polo and a lot more. Most and almost all these sports compete and participates in the every year olympics. If these sports do not get money, the athletes will slowly fade away then olympic sports will also decrease and eventually be gone. After that, then there will probably only consist of the sports, basketball, football, and baseball which are revenue sports.
Conclusion:
So those are the reasons why universities shouldn’t pay the athletes. I am on the con side of paying college athletes because of the following reasons. First, the athletes are basically already being paid, second, it will defeat the main purpose of playing in college sports because students come before athlete, lastly if we were to pay the athletes, olympic sports will not exist. Please vote for the con side because you should do what is right for the athletes and everyone else. Thank you and that concludes my
