College Athletes Deserve To Be Paid Summary

In Michael Wilbon’s article, “College Athletes Deserve to be Paid”, Michael goes on to state that College athletes deserve to be paid simply based on the fact that they are drawing so much money in for the college. He states the most logical way to pay these athletes is to give them a salary. Yes, the most logical alternative to athletic scholarships would be to eliminate scholarships for athletes and simply give them a yearly salary. This sounds like a very good plan, however, this would not benefit the institution whatsoever. If the college or university was $65,000 a year, the school would simply give this money out using their scholarship money under the current system. If the salary system were put into place, the college would hypothetically have to pay $100,000 a year for the same athlete to attend their college. This is because under the salary system, the athlete will now be considered a working man or woman and the government would now take taxes out of their earnings. This is not the case while giving out scholarship money. Since the money from the scholarship is simply to help the student to pay of their college, the money is not taxed as it would be for a working person. They are already receiving compensation through scholarships and it is evident that college kids will not spend their money the way it should be. Colleges are mistakenly looked at as being institutions that bring in a ridiculous amount of money and many people do not realize the amount of money that they have to spend to keep the college running, and running smoothly. If college athletes were paid, it would lead to the ultimate downfall of college sports and the downfall of many colleges.
