When a college athlete gets into trouble, it is important that the school issue a statement as soon as it can because the public will usually form its own perception about the event in the first 24 hours (P. Pedersen, K. Miloch, & P. Laucella, 2007, p. 280). With a women’s basketball player who has had multiple incidents since the beginning of the year, as a member of the public relations department it is vital that I would make sure to get all the information about the incident as possible from the coach and/or player. It is important when dealing with the media that you have all the correct information, if you do not have the correct information or all of it the media will more than likely try making it seem as if the school is trying to cover …show more content…
The best way to deal with this issue is to hold a news conference late that Monday afternoon. The new conference would be the best way to get the information out to the media in and it will give the media an opportunity to ask questions and get quotes for a story (Pedersen, et al, 2007, p. 272). Having the news conference scheduled in the afternoon will give me time to sit down with the head coach and player and prepare them for questions that the media could ask and what kind of punishment the player in question will be facing. This will also give me an opportunity to work with the player on a statement to give to the media where she will need to admit that there is a problem, whether it is alcohol, drugs, or anger issues (Johnson, 2013). The coach will need to address the media with a statement of their own that will acknowledge what the player did. The coach should also let the media know what the punishment will be for the player and what policies will be put in place to keep something like this from happening again (Fiske,

One of the most recent ethical dilemmas in American sport is the Title IX lawsuit of Hernandez vs. Baylor University. This is without a doubt one of the most prominent Title IX lawsuits to be filed in the 2000s. The lawsuit filed by Hernandez specifically states that she was raped by a player on the Bears’ football team, and that the university police refused to accommodate to her specific needs following the incident, simply because the rape occurred off-campus. Also, the lawsuit claims that the university failed to properly train their employees on the appropriate responses to sexual assault, and other Title IX policies. Perhaps the most outstanding piece of information in this case is that the university was aware that the player involved,…

According to Merriam-Webster, a coach is defined as, “a person who teaches and trains the members of a sports team and makes decisions about how the team plays during games.” A coach is much more than what Merriam-Webster defines it as. To be a coach is to be a leader, a mentor, and a role model. A coach must set the standard and lead by example. Five years ago, I began volunteer coaching my son’s youth sports teams.…

In Bob Ryan’s article “I Can Hardly Believe It’s Legal,” Ryan speaks about the violent characteristics the game of football has but still finds a way to entertain the American society. Even though Ryan manages to watch football, he doesn’t agree with the brutal, savagery rules the game has to offer. In “Derrick Gordon Finds his Freedom” written by Cyd Zeigler, he concentrates on sport stereotypes our society has laid upon our athletes. Derrick Gordon, an NCAA basketball player, went through a time of despair when he couldn’t face up to his family and friends about his sexuality. Besides the fact both articles concentrate on two separate issues, together they speculate the physical and mental injuries sports offer and how the values learned overweigh those conditions.…

As the athletic director I would first send my deepest apologies to the swimmer’s parents for everything that has happened. I would explain to her parents that she was examined by not only a trainer but the team’s orthopedic doctor who works for several local sports teams and is highly thought of within the sports medicine field. Although the student was not on the campus of my school when she was injured, so technically it is not our responsibility (I would NOT say that to the parents!) , I would then offer to pay for the student to be tested by another doctor to seek a third opinion on her ankle to figure out if it is a sprain or a fracture and offer her any medical necessities or therapy she would need at the school. After the third opinion,…

Cheating in college sports is a major part of the game or is it destroying the foundation and integrity of the game? Sports, at every level, is supposed to be a training ground for virtue, to mould the character of athletes, coaches and supporters so that they may learn lessons that may help them to achieve off-the-field as much as on. In few other venues are people able to learn as effectively the good habits of perseverance through difficulties, teamwork, striving to overcome obstacles, the importance of preparation and practice, and the courtesy and class we call good sportsmanship. But the field, court, track, diamond, rink, pool and roadway can also cultivate vice, when results become more important than virtue, when winning becomes more…
