Being an athlete is associated closely with proper health maintenance and healthy eating habits. In order to perform at the best of one’s ability, one must be healthy and indulge in proper dietary habits consistently. The article “Dietary Intakes and Eating Habits of College Athletes” dives deep into the eating habits of female college athletes. The purpose of this research was to examine dietary intakes and eating habits of female college athletes to determine if these athletes are, indeed, consuming the proper amount of carbohydrates, protein, and fats per day. Being that those eating habits directly affect the athlete in regards to performance and recovery, consuming an adequate amount of nutrients is vital for athletes’ continuous success. …show more content…
Prior to conducting the research, measurements were taken from each participant. These measurements included height, body mass, and body composition. This allowed the researchers to project the amount of grams of macronutrients per kilogram of body mass needed each day for every participant. Once these measurements were calculated, the researchers then had each participant have a laboratory visit. During this visit, researchers piloted a 1-day 24-hour recall with each and every participant. This recall was done in order to accurately observe the foods and drinks that were consumed in a 24-hour period; being that there is no way for the researchers to be with the participants 24 hours a day. Prior to this 24-hour recall, participants were then advised on how to complete a 3-day food record. This 3-day food record included 2 days during the week and 1 day on the weekend. They were then required to submit the 3-day food record within 1 week. Not only did these participants have to keep track of the food they consumed on a daily basis but they also had to keep track of their workouts; reporting their duration and level of intensity of each workout. Once all of these recordings were received by the researchers they analyzed the recordings using a nutrition software named Diet Analysis Plus. The first limitation was that their study was conducted using a small sample of female college athletes and due to factors like class schedule, training, and other commitments directly affecting the frequency of eating food, it is a bit difficult to generalize the results of this small sample onto the greater population. The second limitation listed by the author was the fact that it is possible that the female athletes in the study may or may not have had a much higher interest in nutrition or health than the majority of other female college, thus also making it difficult to generalize the results. Lastly, the study was conducted using a 3-day food record, which is not as accurate as a 7-day record would have been. These 3 limitations make it a bit difficult to generalize this results to the greater population of female athletes. One limitation that was not listed was that the researchers did not take into account the cultures of the participants. Different cultures live their everyday lives very differently and this can not only affect the results of the study but it also makes it difficult to accurately generalize these results onto the greater
