This is not by chance. I choose to express the views of a cooperative style coach and though winning is kept in perspective, it is not my priority. Instead, I have chosen to use my position to teach athletes how to make decisions as well as to learn from the decisions (sometimes mistakes) that they will make. Now, this does not mean that I will not provide adequate structure and training necessary, on the contrary, I will provide all that I believe is necessary for my athletes to make sound decisions even in the most difficult times on and off the field. By doing this, the times that they are making decisions on the field I will be more submissive, meaning that I will watch, as opposed to screaming at them to make “correct” decisions, to see how they react to the successes and failures in their decision-making. Consequently, I need to be straightforward, positive, and confident when communicating with my athletes and everyone that I might come in contact with. I will use positive communication in order to get my athletes and team moving forward in a positive way. Most importantly, I believe that the ability to actively listen to the concerns and thoughts of my “community” will not only help me to understand the person I am communicating with, but also show them that I care about what they have to say.
