A popular issue in the world of sports today is the compensation of college athletes. The big question is, how much compensation do these college students deserve for being part of the school’s athletic program? These kids train hard, risk injury and give their sport their all every day while they still are on a college schedule taking regular courses. By generating ticket and merchandise sales, these kids make an enormous amount of money for the Universities and the NCAA but don’t ever see a dollar in their name. Do these athletes deserve to be paid to play? No, student-athletes in the NCAA already receive different treatment from the rest of the student-body. Many athletes get top-notch trainers, coaches, facilities, dining and clothing on top of getting their tuition and their housing paid for. With all of these experiences, expert coaches, special treatment and payment of schooling and housing, no college athlete needs to be paid for playing a sport. …show more content…
Not to mention that most schools also provide athletes with a free pass to the school dining hall if the athletes on campus do not already have their own separate place to eat for free. On average, room and board (housing and meals), cost eight to ten thousand a year (Dorfman). College athletes are receiving all of this at no cost and most of the time get higher quality meals and preferred housing on campus compared to other students. To put this cost of living into perspective, "… a student athlete at a major conference school on full scholarship is likely receiving a package of education, room, board, and coaching/training worth between 50,000 and 125,000 per year depending on the sport and whether they attend a public or private university" (Dorfman). By receiving their room and board for free, college athletes are getting a huge help
