Who wouldn’t want to get a college education for close to free? Some college athletes don’t believe this is enough for the hard work they put in for the college sports they play in. For college athletes, scholarships should be enough payment for the time spent since they are there to get a degree and not to get paid. Between the scholarships earned, time spent, and not being an employee the college athlete really has a great opportunity. Students receive more scholarship and financial opportunities than what meets the eye. One of these financial opportunities include free academic tutoring. Not only is there tutoring but also “other personal development programs and services” (Gerdy 8). This is just the beginning of what college athletes receive. Scholarships upon scholarship land in these college athletes’ hands. Some scholarships are more bountiful than what other students receive. This is just because they play athletes (Lewis and Williams 22). Furthermore, the “NCAA provides $2 billion” for scholarships and other financial programs. This impacts student …show more content…
College athletes will never get back the time they spent on sports. The flip side of that is the athletes are using that college time to prepare for something else. Such as the NFL requires three years of college before a career is even possible (Lewis and Williams 22). This creates a liability to the athletes because they will have easy passing classes so they can play sports and not worry about having a bad grade to prevent them from doing so. An example of this is an athlete getting an A- for completing a “146 word, error-prone essay” on an important issue of civil rights (Neuhauser 11). Today’s society allows this kind of behavior but what does the student get out of this? These students are in college to get a degree not to just play sports.
