College And Career Readiness: Same And Different Analysis

Improved Essays
Whenever I think about how my life immediately changed, I think about my change from a high needs school to one of the best high schools in Virginia. I grew up in the DC metro area and spent most of my life bouncing between schools that were worse than the last. When I was in 9th grade, I moved. I was lucky to move to a much better school district because my aunt owned a home there. I think about how circumstance changed my life a lot. Whenever I am interacting with my students, I think about how I felt as a student. I think about the teachers who didn’t think any of us would get too far in live and I let my experiences as an “inner city” youth guide me while I am teaching.

There are various reasons as to why I’m deserving of the Etna-Dixmont School Scholarship. The most prevalent reason is my family history and connection with the town of Dixmont. My father and my grandparents moved to from Massachusetts to Dixmont, Maine when he was in second grade. My grandfather bought a house on Route 9 in Dixmont, and some other land in addition to that. The Dixmont Corner Church was built in 1835, and had an active one room school house next to it that was built in 1808.…

And because of this, the students might know, or have a better idea, of what they want later on in life or sooner. “Today’s high school students are faced with a world of new challenges that are just thrown at them randomly: like career choices, their own family, and even their morality” (Anna Baker). And because of this Anna believes that if the students have a stronger sense of who they are then most of these decisions will be so much easier. “Each student should learn to accept oneself (and then be able to answer questions about themselves) like decisions and choices on, and in, life. Answering these questions is starting the student on the road to being able to bear one’s own, individual, responsibility” (Anna Baker).…

Freeman Hrabowski Colleges Prepare People for Life and Liz Addison Two Years Are Better than Four both explore the idea of how college is the right choice for the moment and the further. Even though Hrabowski and Addison both address that college gives people a platform to start a better life, Hrabowski provides a more convincing argument for he has a better emphasis and understanding on higher education's effect on people, college success rate information and better real-life examples. Hrabowski provides a more convincing argument with a better emphasis and understanding on higher education. For one Hrabowski “has been the president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County since 1992” (255). Being the president of a university…

Unknown Title I have changed and grown as a learner over my past four years here at Blackfoot High School in a positive way. During my first two years of school I was a terrible student and learner. I never really cared about the assignments that were given to me. I always feel asleep in class, and I did not realize that what I was doing then would affect me now a few years later and how hard it would before me to raise my GPA.…

I want to write about the experiences that I encountered after attending Carl Junction schools, and the impact and difference it made on my life. People think all schools are the same, that it is school, there’s kids and there’s teachers, you go and sit for 8 hours and you get marked as ‘present’ regardless if you’re learning or not, and if you’re present and you don’t fail, then you go on to the next grade. But I realized something different, when things got switched up for me. I attended Carl Junction schools from 1st grade to the very end of 6th grade, and then I started Joplin in the 7th grade, not knowing anyone from this school, or really this area. When I started school at Joplin I was so nervous, I was nervous about the normal stuff, that no one would like me, I would sit by myself, or people would be mean to me.…

From the age of two, children are put into the school system, where they will remain for a quarter of their lives. Schools become a safe place for students where no matter what is going on at home or in their community, they know that when they go to school they are safe. The idea that teachers provide a positive, safe environment for children despite what is going on at home is prevalent in Lynda Barry’s, “The Sanctuary of School.” She mentions the positive effects on students, as their teacher’s involvement is important to ensuring their learning process runs smoothly in the classroom, despite what is happening outside of it. I agree with Lynda Barry’s stance stating teachers become a mentor for students, but I believe she overlooks the negatives…

A motif that haunts the months of college applications and preparation is the daunting idea of seniors entering into the "real world." An alleged, new realm of reality that discredits the validity of the last few years in high school, not to mention the three before that and all the experiences previously. This concept coincides seamlessly with the idea that college is a beacon of newfound adulthood. Even so, each student's differing personality, aspirations, culture and tribulations falsifies the belief that adulthood is that straightforward. Thus, in order to define the moment that marked my transition into adulthood, I must first define what being an adult means to me.…

It was always my mother’s dream to have all of my brothers go to college, but only one of them were able to enter at Chabot. Unfortunately, my brother had to drop out of college because of the money issue we had, where rent had become the first priority to our family. Seeing this happen to my brother, made me feel concerned about the future, and also envision what could be stored in mine. The fact that my brother was the first to enter college in my family though, was a big inspiration. This made me recognize that I shouldn’t take my education for granted because not all is given the opportunity.…

As a future counselor, ways that I may use this assessment with my clients are for them to notice their discrepancies on how they see themselves versus how they want to be. Additionally, this will allow clients to see what they need to change and come up with solutions on how to reduce their discrepancies. I can use these assessment for career counseling by having client sort what they like to do then match it up to jobs that fit those traits. Furthermore, this can work with clients that have money management issues because clients can sort what they spend their money on and then sort the cards by what they need to spend their money on. This can let clients view their discrepancies and then put themselves in a position where they can start…

People have different reasons for continuing their education. My primary reason for continuing my education is I want to learn new things and keep abreast to changes.
