College Admissions Essay: Why Photography Is Important To Me

In my dreams, I am a different person than who I am in real life. I can fly, swim for hours without needing a breath of air, and sing as loud as I can. I can see the world in millions of bright colors, smell the most delightful smells, and feel comfortable on any surface. I have never been one to have my report cards hung on the refrigerator for the whole household to see and I grew up thinking I was not smart or worthy of appreciation because I was not good at taking tests or turning in homework. My whole childhood was filled with numbers and letters that instantly put a value on my life. The higher my numbers would be, the more worth I felt. I have envisioned days where I would shoot from sunrise to sundown with no rest. To me, it has never been tiring and if anything, every second would be fascinating. If it were up to me, I would shoot all day and edit all of my photographs the following night every day. I am impassioned with capturing stories that have not been seen or done before. Aspiring to do what has not been done can be challenging but in the end, it is all the reward when my photos are being admired by friends, family, and sometimes even strangers. And not admiring as a gesture of being a friend but admiring as if it meant something to them. My goal is to produce photos that can each speak to someone on a personal level with just a simple glance. My favorite type of photographs is those who take more than a week’s planning and organizing. The more time I take to plan a photo, the more excited I get and the more passion grows inside of me. The time allows me to let my brain get in touch with imagination and expand my idea to something more.
