She was a child of tailors and was raised in a small village in northwest India. When she was only seventeen years old, she began her nursing career, a passion she developed through her relatives who served in the Indian Air Force. Similar to the soldiers, she would sacrifice herself in order to help her community and ultimately her country. My mother is one of five siblings and was the first to be successful and independent. She guided one of her two brothers through medical school by paying the expensive tuition fees. Her sacrifice and investment were fruitful because her brother now owns a clinic in India and above all is able to provide for his family. Both of my mother’s sisters are teachers while her other brother is a mechanical engineer. Approximately nine years ago, after being satisfied with how her siblings are living, she decided to immigrate to California so me and my sister would have a great opportunity to succeed. To continue her passion for nursing in California, she obtained a Bachelors of Nursing while still working two jobs to support her family.

A societal change must first come from within since, as Osamu Dazai, a Japanese writer, best puts it, “What is society but an individual?” I have always tried to break the impossibilities myself before promoting others to do the same. More specifically through my passion for connecting with the Chinese society that I was intimately surrounded by, I learned the Chinese language, and soon my classmates and teachers, who once thought Chinese was an impossible language to master, realized that they too can learn. Changing ourselves is however not an easy task and it requires self-motivation, knowledge, and a passionate heart.…

The Responsible Citizens’ Proliferation of Knowledge In the essay “Having a Degree and Being Educated”, Edmund Pellegrino argues that people are becoming dangerously dependent on illusions to bear with reality. Pellegrino declares that people believe that “having a degree is the same as being educated”. Pellegrino states knowledge is nothing but meaningless information without the ability to not just understand it, but to be able to apply it to our daily lives and he then continues to compare knowledge to a disease that while non-lethal, needs to be handled with caution to prevent it from spreading. Since people don’t have the information necessary to select complicated decisions they decide to allow supposed “experts” to select the decisions…

“Education is learning what you didn’t even know you didn’t know.” This quote said by Daniel J. Boorstin, an American historian at the University of Chicago, is one way people may view the educational system in the United States. Getting an education is about learning things that one would have never studied before and improving one’s intellectual thought process. A similar quote my math teacher used to say: “It’s the same thang with another name,” brings out an argument that education is learning to think about what one knows in a different light. In Gerald Graff’s essay, “Hidden Intellectualism”, he responds to the educational system, arguing that street smarts are just as important as book smarts.…

The chapter “Hidden Intellectualism”, apart of the book They Say I Say by both Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein. This chapter within the book suggests that education systems need to revamp the way they view street smarts and what is an actual “intellectual”. Furthermore, David Hume developed a theory of know, which discusses that we can explain and justify our knowledge through scientific proof or the two kinds of perceptions, which are impressions and ideas. Additionally, David Hume explained that impressions are described as sense experience, and ideas are mental constructs that are formed in our mind. As a teacher the most important thing that I want students to learn is the ability to connect concepts learned in class to real life situations. In this day and age I see an America full of citizens that in my opinion lack the ability to critically think about the problems in this world. My job though, is to generate a new kind of breed that will help students achieve better results that in turn will lead to better decision making. Some of the strategies I have in mind is about looking at issues across the world such as war in the Middle East.
