College Admissions Essay: Why I Want To Live

I want to entertain; knowing that I can make people happy with what I can create, with what I say and what I do makes all the difference to me. As a child, I loved theatrical performances with all my heart, funny improv games and shows with my little sister helped test our creative outlets. I also played with musical skills picked up thanks to my father; the way songs can audibly represent emotions, settings, even complete stories fascinated me. So, I set out on a mission to create and to make and experience everything I could to be involved with art in general. I performed in our middle school select choir and the three play productions in my time there as well, because I could see that it made people happy to be included or involved, either watching or performing. I experimented with the musical media I loved involving electronic dance music for a time, tapping out harmonies on demo computer programs even though I couldn’t read music or compose full, polished songs. And, bringing fine arts and other mediums like film into the equation, I knew I had something to offer, steadily getting drawn first into illustration and later realizing that animation was my true passion. It had everything—I let the stories I had been creating since I was a kid loose in a medium that twisted together everything I could ever love and more. An unusually fragile underclassman: devoid of faith and fearful of a new environment brimming with the cold embrace of the unknown. “What do you like about yourself?” Sitting in the audience, listening to an assembly during my freshman orientation of high school, this existential question hit me like a tidal wave—initially destructive yet ultimately metamorphic. Those around me blessed with a wealth of confidence from a young age beamed with vanity: athletes, scholars, musicians and those exceptionally precocious few with the ability to thrive in multiple environments.…

The Dominican Republic; a place where you can count the opportunities of success with one hand. If you didn’t have a connection to someone in the government, the chances of obtaining a job were improbable; this was common knowledge amongst the people of my country. I often found myself eavesdropping on my friends conversing about escaping to America. As tempting as America sounded, I knew illegally entering was wrong. I was 17 years old when the connotation of “America” changed for me; my father came home with wonderful news: we had been given the opportunity as a family to move to America.…

I grew up with a paintbrush in one hand and a pencil in the other, and I own more art supplies than A.C.Moore. In high school, I have chosen studio art as my elective every year, and I have had four projects selected for Spring-Ford’s annual art show. In one of my favorite pieces, I incorporated music by drawing hands playing a piano in white charcoal on black paper. Then after attending several mission trips throughout high school, I discovered another passion of mine. I realized I like helping others.…

For years of my life, I hated everything, except for theatre. I went through life with a negative attitude. I wanted to be isolated so that I didn’t have to worry about anything or anyone. In the theatre was the only time when I could truly be myself. I poured all of my pent-up emotions into my performances, I was the happiest on stage and although it was a wonderful release, I never gave my emotions and heart to anything else.…

I thought of my self as an odds-beater, and in many ways I still do. Not just any individual can manage to contract Lyme disease not once, but twice, have shingles before even entering adulthood, possess fractured foot bones that look shockingly similar to that of a prehistoric creature, or offer sideways smiles through a pesky case of torticollis. Some of my statistical defiance was chance, while some was self-produced. As a child, playing piano with traditional posture seemed too ordinary; instead I played backwards with my eyes closed. Awareness that many of my friends did not know how to back up a boat trailer, clean out a drain trap, or pay their own bills motivated me to master the tasks.…

Enter, if you dare… I stood in the middle of the bookstore's children's section, running the pads of my thumbs along the raised, bumpy title of the book that would inevitably change my life. My brow furrowed as I studied the cover. A green creature with horns that resembled a ram's on either side of its head, gazed back at me glowing red eyes. It's gnarled and clawed hands held a sign that read, "Welcome to Horrorland where nightmares come to life!" In the distance, there was an amusement park.…

Music theatre: an art through which to lose oneself and find oneself simultaneously, tell stories that need to be told, cathartically influence people, and give joy to both the performers and audience members. Growing up in an artistic household, full of music, theatre, and dance, I discovered these truths firsthand. I began singing early in life, and dancing around the house, singing songs, reading, and drawing soon consumed the vast majority of my childhood. Early on, I encountered the indescribable sensation of creating music and telling stories. To describe it as boundless joy would be an understatement, and I am thankful because that intangible, tremendous feeling stayed with me, despite the challenges, trials, and tribulations of pursuing…

“Come on, get out of the car. It's not a big deal. You need to get to school,” Those were words that I commonly heard the second half of my freshman year of high school. Of course most high school age kids don’t want to go to school, but it's for trivial reasons like the fact the work is boring. I didn’t want to go to school for a much more complicated reason; anxiety rushed through my body any time I even thought about getting close to the school building.…
