College Admissions Essay: Why I Am Who I Am

The reason I am Who I am:
As a young child I had very many influences in my life. I had many learning, and educational experiences before I even started school. The influences I have had throughout my life have brought me to wanting to pursue my life in the career path of nursing. Also I have been exposed to many other things, but one thing that has stuck as an interest to me since I was four years old was cheerleading, and I would consider myself more knowledgeable in that subject than most. All of these things wouldn’t be in my life if it had not been for my sponsors of literacy that I have had throughout my life.
The Path of My Literacy: My mom has had a huge impact on the educational part of my life. She has been the biggest literary

That’s when she really started being tough on me when it came to school. I probably took more “accelerated reading” test than anybody could imagine taking. Up until about the middle of first grade we still read together almost every night. “Because of Winn Dixie” was my most favorite chapter book of all times, and we probably read it ten times. When I was in first grade I started reading chapter books on my own, and probably read every single Junie B Jones book that has ever been written. The summer after first grade my mom bought a set of the Magic Tree House books and made me read all of them. At the time I was so mad that she was making me read over the summer! But now I understand that she was only trying to help me. I use to think she was to hard on me when it came to school, but now that I think about it I am glad that she was hard on me because it has to taught me to have high expectations of myself. Like in the passage Brandt (1997) claims “Most of the time, however literacy takes its shape from the interest of its sponsor” I can see that because a lot of the ways that I view educational things is the way that my mother taught me to view them, and the ways that she viewed them(p. 4). Also the other sponsors of literacy that I had throughout middle school and high school. I had some really good teachers, and I also had some not so good teachers. One of the best teachers I have ever had was my …show more content…
I started cheering when I was four years old, and I have been hooked every since. Cheerleading has always been a go to for me. I can have so many things on my mind, and go to cheerleading practice and they all go away for a while. The thing that impacted me start cheerleading was when I was little I use to watch cheerleading movies all of the time. I thought it was so cool to be a cheerleader because at that point and time on tv all of the cheerleaders were so cool. Then when I started cheering I learned really quick that it is so much more than that. One of my most favorite memories, and by far the best feeling I have ever had in my life is when my team one the state championship. That feeling of achievement is a feeling I will never forget as long as I live. Another thing that is great about cheerleading is getting to participate in competitions that are charity events, and you know that you are helping raise money to help people. In one article it uses the example that the first place winner wins $1000 for their charity, the second place winner wins $750 for their charity, and so on(Easton, 2014). I would say that I know a lot more about cheerleading than the average person does, and even though it is almost over for me, it will always have a special place in my

Cheerleading is not just standing on the sidelines of a football game looking pretty in a uniform and cheering on the players. It goes far beyond the expectations of what people think it is. A cheerleading routine consists of a a team performing tumbling, jumping, dancing, stunts and a cheer for three minutes. It takes hours and hours every week of practice to perfect a three-minute routine. Being an athlete, who has played three varsity sports, I will always argue that cheerleading is one of the hardest, most exciting and dangerous sports there is.…
