College Admissions Essay: Where Are You From?

Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. Share your story. The hardest question for me to answer is when people ask “Where are you from?” Do they want to know where I was born? Where I lived last? Where I call home? I end up talking for a long time about how I have moved around. I was born in Bountiful, Utah, and I lived there until I was nine. I moved to the small town of Hawthorne, Nevada. It wasn’t a great place to grow up, so my mom acquired a new job in Daegu, South Korea. I enjoyed Daegu more than Hawthorne, but we ended up moving again to Vicenza, Italy. My mother works as a civilian for the United States Army, so I’m technically not a Military Brat. I like to call myself one, for I have lived a similar life. I currently live in Las Vegas, Nevada, and I am trying to leave as soon as I can. I call Vicenza, Italy my home since that is where I actually grew up. It remains to be my favorite city to visit. I am a boy scout, and most of the camping locations were in different countries. We had camps in Switzerland, Germany, and even France. My favorite camp was in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany where I awoke everyday to the view of the Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany, towering over you. I consider myself lucky to have visited places that people only read about in textbooks. The most saddening, yet memorable, place I've been is Dachau Concentration Camp. One of many camps, the gate with the phase "Ach Beit Mact Frei" is etched into my memory. Work will set you free is what it translates to, yet many victims were not set

“College”, I can see that just mentioning the word ignites a fire in my parents’ eyes and I sense the excitement they feel as they drop question after question about it. Coming from a family that has never had a member attend a 4-year university has made it a huge priority in my life as a first generation student. The idea of being the first in a lineage to attend a higher form of education puts a lot on my shoulders as a senior in high school, but this pressure is actually my inspiration to achieve such a goal. I believe that being a Mexican American also has played a crucial role in my goal because my culture has raised me to be a passionate young man who pushes himself to achieve what I set out to do. As my fellow great Latino César Chávez…

Apartments and storefronts looked like ancient structures lined up along the streets.…
