College Admissions Essay: What Makes Us Who I Am

Throughout our short lives, we are tested with various challenges. Some of us prevail over them and move on, while others must endure them day after day. It is unfortunate that not all of us are blessed with perfect lives filled with grandeur, but if everyone lived a life without obstacles, we would forget what it meant to be human. We would forget how to use our skills to their fullest potential. Because it’s not the challenges in life that make us who we are, rather what we do to overcome them.

I’ve never faced a major obstacle in life in which I was forced to sell newspapers on the streets in order to support my family. However, there have been instances where I’ve had to use my resources; skills that I’ve learned over the years in order to get myself out of situations. I’ve lived in five different places in the sixteen years that I’ve been alive. And trust me, moving doesn’t get easier. You’re not only leaving old friends and family behind, but in a sense other than literal, you’re leaving your home. I spent 1st grade through 4th grade in Houston, and have been living in Dallas ever since the 5th grade. Roughly 7 years in total, and no it hasn’t taken me 7 years to adapt. Yes the kids my age were immature, but still they tried roughing up the wrong person. I had a hard time interacting with them, the stuff they did didn’t seem to interest me. So perhaps they thought that I thought what they were doing was boring. It was partly my fault that I was a shy person at heart, and have been so since a kid.
