College Admissions Essay: What Makes Me Who I Am

A great man by the name of Jack Lord once said “What you have, what you are - your looks, your personality, your way of thinking - is unique. We all have a story to tell, we are all unique. If someone were to describe me in three words I would have to say that most likely this person would say that I am intelligent, helpful, and creative.
Intelligence is something that is achieved and is not a trait you are naturally born with. When I was in elementary school and even some parts of middle school I was not considered an intelligent student. Me and my family moved from Argentina to Florida when I was only two years old so having to go into the school system not knowing a single English word was a bridge that I needed to cross. After the torture of being humiliated and put down I decided to go beyond all expectations and achieve being in AP classes and in a highly recognized Finance Academe and go on to achieve many awards, honors and recognitions. Just last year I took second in an FBLA Banking and Finance competition. I am now still currently enrolled in AP and AICE courses and have been enrolled in Finance Academe 7 years straight.

We are each unique in every way and I am personally helpful and take joy in helping people and my community. I have acquired a total over 700 community service hours and counting. I would not be able to give you an accurate number of hours because I am constantly submitting more and more hours because every week I acquire about 3 or more hours from helping my community. It is an awesome feeling being able to help my community and being able to help people. From volunteering at blood drives, to churches to beach clean ups, I just find it essential for our society to learn that if every person would pitch in and help each other, our world would be a much better

What is intelligence? Is it Intelligence Quotient measures or “common sense”, “street knowledge”, even “the ability to process information properly”. Intelligence not only means being intelligent in a single way, but being intelligent in multiple ways. The works of Howard Gardner and Gerald Graff both elaborate on what it is to be intelligent and how the school system should encourage or make available different strategies for students to truly succeed in school and in life. Although Gerald Graff’s view points have a more relevance in todays approach in teaching, Howard Garner’s theories are better well structured and better to follow in todays school education system.…

In today’s society, we are raised to believe mandatory standardized test scores accurately define an individual’s intelligence. Along with that, we are also taught that having a low GPA score means we are senseless and useless, and a high GPA score means we should expect a successful future because we are so bright and intelligent. Standardized tests and GPAs are both common mechanisms for measuring intelligence, but are also systems which can be cheated. For this reason, intelligence is not something that can be measured by a silly test; it is something that is far beyond the idea that it can be defined by numbers. It is a set of skills most adapt as they age and progress through life.…

1 a) I would respond to Becky’s problem by saying that she is not justified. Becky believes in the claims of increased happiness due to the vitamin in the magazine article, however, this “popular Health magazine” does not indicate that there is any scientific or experimental backing to support its claim. The “popular” status could mean that there is the illusion of authority or even celebrity/ lifestyle endorsement, and in Becky’s perspective, she could be biased if Health magazine usually has her favorite endorsers or a lifestyle she strives for. Becky simply states that she has felt better “based on her experience” The vitamins’ only success claim is explicitly stated from Becky (as far as we know) and since her trust in the vitamins is filtered…

There are different ways of understanding how people cope with success and failure. When coping with failure the author explains two different mindsets. Firstly, the “Fixed Mindset”, this is a way of thinking that is carved in stone. With a fixed mindset you are either smart or not and your qualities and capabilities are carved in stone. Also, this mindset believes that a certain amount of intelligence, a certain amount of personality, and a certain moral character are inherent.…

Famous Social Activist Desmond Tutu, once said, “Do your little bit of good where you are; it is those little bits of good put all together that overwhelm the world.” In my experience, I have certainly found this to be true. Life is a blessing to me I am so lucky and privileged to be able to have an education, loving friends and family, and a place to call my home. Lately, through the stress of my junior year of high school, I have been forgetting to connect to my true self. Staying up late for assignments and keeping up with extracurriculars has made it difficult to remember some of the most important things in life.…

“Different”, am I different because I am an African-American? Or because we don’t have the same skin color? Or what if it’s because you pursue me as a “bastard child”? Growing up, I had a sense of everyone was the equal, and that we had the same sense care and compassion. It never crossed my mind as to why I would get certain looks or see people holding the belonging close to them as they see me walk past.…

This world is so diverse as all people have their own story, that is composed of their own life. I personally think it is so amazing that we are all able to connect in different ways, no matter what our story is. At seventeen, approaching eighteen many young individuals have backgrounds and identities that make us who we are. For me, one thing in particular has truly made me who I am.…

Opportunity is something I believe my generation has forsaken. Our inadequacy is no fault of our own, it’s the human condition. We were raised with everything at our fingertips and deprived of the conditioning needed prepare us for reality. With this in mind, it’s no surprise that for the first time in American history, parents do not believe that their offspring will be more successful than them. If I were given an opportunity, a golden ticket to explore the world and all it’s enigmas, I would go home.…

Even though there are many things that make me who I am, only few help contribute to the fact that I am very persistent. The dictionary definition of persistent is as follows: continuing firmly or obstinately in a course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition. My obsessions, hobbies, characteristics, achievements, and aspirations help me to always remain persistent. To begin with, many of the things I love factor into my persistence. I enjoy reading, and have a tendency to easily obsess over new words, quotes, Nicolas Spark’s novels, and organized libraries.…

Throughout our short lives, we are tested with various challenges. Some of us prevail over them and move on, while others must endure them day after day. It is unfortunate that not all of us are blessed with perfect lives filled with grandeur, but if everyone lived a life without obstacles, we would forget what it meant to be human. We would forget how to use our skills to their fullest potential. Because it’s not the challenges in life that make us who we are, rather what we do to overcome them.…
