I worked day and night to get perfect grades, and when I graduated, I applied to Oxford to major in philosophy. Surprisingly,

Since I was a young child my parents had always instilled in me the value of education and the fact that I have to be gratuitous for all the gifts that have been given to me. While I had always respected their wishes, I had never really understood their motif behind their actions because of the lack of education and knowledge that I had been presented. The three main rules that my parents had wanted me to follow was do not waste what is given to you, absorb as much knowledge as possible, and give back to those less fortunate as you. The reason my parents had the ability to present to me these rules is because they had grown up in a developing country, India. At a young age they were exposed to those who were impoverished, not because it was…

The idea that education is something that is to be sought after and beneficial to its recipients is universally known. What happens, however, when only a portion of the population has access to a higher level of learning after high-school? That is the question Margaret A. There is a myriad of reasons why certain people cannot succeed in higher fields of learning- reasons that are exclusive to each individual, but the main culprit is lack of educated parents which is a precursor to uneducated children. It is a cycle that is ever present in our culture.…

Growing up as the middle child in a lower income family was, at best, difficult. Abusive parents, rampant drug use, and less than caring family members left me in a precarious position as a child. Was this how every family interacted? Is this what I was to become? However, income does not always determine our opportunities. While Wes Moore and his family did not have a high income, Joy tried her hardest to give Wes a good education and he later went to college after going through military school. Joy’s strong affluence on her son was the reason Wes was so successful, and went on to do great things. Moore’s lack of affluence, I believe, was a big reason he took the paths that he did. While his mother did not encourage the negative choices he made, she did not do much to steer him to the right path.…

Education has always been a part of my life. Long before my first day of kindergarten, my family’s love of learning has heavily influenced me. My maternal grandfather told me stories of people in places long ago with the same excitement and joy when I was five as he did when I was fifteen. I savor every moment I spend in my Uncle’s living room, their cozy furniture and reading lamps a mere practicality, while the books lining every shelf stole the spotlight. At nearly every stage in my elementary schooling, my mom inspired me to persevere and fought alongside me.…

At an early age, I didn’t understand the concept of an immigrant family and that our resources were very limited. It wasn’t until I got older, that I finally understood and recognized the struggle that my family went and still continues to go through. My realization began when I was about 11-years old and I noticed that my father not only worked for his own small gardening service, but that he also took my older brothers to work with him. I knew it was a time for serious measures because my brothers started helping my father when they were close to my age, and they continued throughout their whole school years. Everything was going normal in my family then, we rented a house that was in the name of my aunt, had enough money for the bills,…
