College Admissions Essay: Unexpected Triumph

Unexpected Triumph Arriving at the track, I vividly remember stepping outside and smelling the blades of freshly cut grass. It instantly made me noxious, for it triggered the voice in my head questioning me, "Are you good enough? Are you fast enough? Are you worthy enough to be here?" I assured my criticizing conscience that my track career had come to an end after eighth grade, and I kept that promise to myself freshman year as I avoided the stress and anxiety known to be caused by track meets. Spring of sophomore year came around which was a time I'll never forget. It was a time in my life my friends challenged me to push beyond my limits and experience uncharted possibilities. A result of this influence contained an intangible lesson of …show more content…
They encouraged me to join the track program by recollecting the success I had in the past. At first, I was hesitant because as a middle school athlete I was barely able to combat the pressure of running in a race. I doubted I would be able to handle the intensity and competitiveness in High School Track and Field. My friends attempted to convince me track would be a perfect opportunity to step out of my shell, make new friends, and rediscover an old talent. Although I had negative associations with their proposal, the girls continued urging me to partake in the program. I slowly began to agree with the idea that participating in track could be beneficial by forcing me to be less reclusive when surrounded by unfamiliar faces or when confronted by …show more content…
Suddenly, I realized I was past the finish line and the prelim race was over. Unsure of my placement I breathlessly began strolling back to the bleachers. At this point I didn't care how well I ran, I was just glad the race was over and my nerves had vanished. I listened to the announcer report those who advanced to the final round. Random names of girls were being listed out, then I surprisingly heard, "Janna Skinner from Langham Creek." I couldn't believe my ears. Out of all the athletes that competed in several heats of hurdles I, who was considered an amateur, was one of the top eight. I was utterly

Everyone has experienced some sort of atrocious pain in their lives. At one point in my life I did not believe I will ever walk again. A troubling life changing event occurred when I was just fourteen years old. The difference between that track season (sophomore year) versus the last one (junior year), was consistency. I improved by a lot sophomore year and got much better times but I lacked consistency. I was stuck in a cycle: race well, put too much pressure on myself, not do as well, feel really sad, and then back to square one… maybe. This went on into my junior year cross country season.…

Because the ninth graders were not allowed to run in this strictly middle school race, I was among the oldest in the group. This was the meet that our team had been preparing for since the beginning of the season, and I prepared even more intensely in the past few days. I had been hydrating well, eating the right foods, and even skipped swim practice the day before to rest my muscles before the meet. This had been the moment that I had been preparing for, and made sacrifices for, and doing well felt like the only option. The pressure was swallowing me up, and pulling me back to the…

Throughout my four years of high school, the seaside community of Narragansett, Rhode Island, has encouraged and nurtured the growth of its youthful inhabitants as students and individuals. The supportive environment and abundant opportunities available for students to pursue their passions and help others consequently benefits the community as a whole. As an athlete, and more specifically, a runner, I have aspired to motivate and encourage young athletes to enjoy the fun and friendships that emerge from being a part of a sports team. During the summer, I volunteered at the Summer Youth Track Series at Narragansett High School. Eager smiles painted the faces of the joyous young runners lining up in heats, ready to run as fast as they can in the 100 meter sprint, throw as far as they can in the turbo javelin, and jump as far as they can in the long jump.…

While I’ve always considered running to be my strong suit, learning how to expand my athletic horizons would ultimately be a sign of my growing maturity as I begin the next chapter of my life and 4 years of continued involvement on campus. Throughout high school, being a member of multiple team sports impacted me greatly in a multitude of ways. I clearly remember the first day of high school, after training with my Cross Country team the majority of the summer, I felt that I already knew people with similar interests as me all around my school. In many ways, rowing achieves the same idea. Along with my roommates, and peers attending Madison from my High School, I would have members of the rowing team to fall back on, study with, explore campus life with, and build lasting friendships after my 4 years on campus are complete.…

Bang, the gun sounds. I sprint out of my box, following teammates in pursuit of the leader. The pack of cross country runners appears to envelop me from my parent’s sight. I hurdle toward the first flag, passing competitors right and left. All the rest is a blur, just the pounding of my heart and the thumping of feet as I run, breathing heavier and heavier, twisting and turning through the trails to reach the chute.…

Imagine being in 6th grade, and having someone come to talk to your entire sixth grade student body about middle school sports. During a question and answer session I asked if it was possible to run cross country and play basketball, and in a loud voice that went across the gym, a kid said “Why ask you’re too fat to play sports” and the whole gym burst into laughter. This is how my introduction to middle school officially began. As one could imagine the pain and humiliation that went along with my torture, but because I suffer from generalized anxiety disorder my problems were exemplified. I spent the next few weeks listening to everyone talk about me, repeat the story and laugh.…

The Lesson in Quitting For the past 7 years of my life, swimming has played a huge role. Growing up, I had always enjoyed being in the water, and was one of the odd kids that genuinely enjoyed swimming lessons, no bribes required (thinking about it, I wish I had some of those kids in the lessons I teach now). Overtime, it began to feel less like a passion and more like an obligation; something I had committed to that was too late to stop. I was afraid to quit, afraid to disappoint, and trying to be dedicated to a sport I had lost interest in made me start to hate it. This year, I finally decided to drop the sport, and am now embracing the huge change it has had in my life.…

“Runners on your mark…Set...Poww!” Those were the last sounds I heard during what could have been my last race of my sophomore year in collegiate Track and Field. It was a frisky, yet cool Saturday in April and after a strong performance in the previous indoor and outdoor season (4x100m and 400m), I was determined to continue and uphold my strong form on this day. There is a saying that things do not always turn out the way we hope, but I believe, there is always a positive lesson to be learned from every life event. I love sports.…
