For my entire life, I always believed that when I reached two points in my life I would be an adult with the world at my fingertips. One of those points was turning sixteen years old. I thought that being sixteen would automatically make me an adult, like what happens in the Disney movies I grew up watching. I was fortunate enough to get my license and my first job at sixteen, getting my first taste at the adult world. Being sixteen did not automatically make me an adult but it did open the doors to the freedom that I could not get enough of. The other point in my life that I believe would make me an adult would be going off to college. For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to go off to college somewhere far away and be on my own. I crave freedom and independence after being babied for my entire life. I believe that going to college will finally be the point in my life which will transition me into being the adult I want to be.

In the article written by Julie Beck entitled “When Are You Really an Adult?” she uses a series of true life accounts to attempt to define when a person becomes an adult and what defines adulthood. She begins with the real life example of Henry David Thoreau and catches the attention of the reader by leading them down the path that she is talking about a current day young man. However, when she reveals she is talking of a young man of years past it is obvious that many different generations struggle with the definition and thought of being an adult. Beck makes it clear that what defines being an adult is not clear, there is no black and white answer. There are many factors leading to whether a person feels they have become an adult.…
