They have a daughter who is just a few years younger than me; I noticed that she never had clothes that fit her because her parents couldn’t afford to buy her any. I wanted to help but wasn’t quite sure how. Usually, when I get my paycheck each month, I separate it into savings, necessary expenditures, and leisure spending. One month I decided that I would sacrifice my spending money to take their daughter on a birthday shopping spree. She had never got to go shopping in a mall before so it was a big deal for her. Although their family is still struggling, at least now their daughter can go to school without being ashamed or embarrassed of the clothes she wears.
One of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had is volunteering at Children’s Village (an extension of our local hospital geared towards kids with learning disabilities and their families). I have spent more than 50 hours volunteering over the last two years. Once when helping with a gymnastics class, I was paired with a young girl who was paralyzed. She would lie down on a skateboard so I could wheel her around with the rest of the kids. The sweet smiles and pure laughs of these children have touched my heart and made it all worth
