Mark Twain once said, “The first problem for all of us, men and women, is not to learn, but to unlearn.” I must use every resource possible to ensure my future is bright and better for the people that follow my footsteps. This cannot be done without taking all necessary measures to go to college despite my economic background.

Even though I applied for financial aid I was denied. I came to learn that the federal formula was weighted not only by income but also by assets. So my parent’s small nest egg, a modest home with sundry repairs to come and a mortgage to be paid every month for the next ten years, counted against me. I’d attend classes during the early morning hours, late afternoons, evenings and weekends as long as it didn’t interfere with my work hours. When breaks came around, while some of my friends were off on vacation or volunteering in faraway countries, I worked extra hours.…

Being a member of the board of a scholarship committee for need-based awards does not come with simple decisions. People that work for this committee have to think about each student suffering from financial problems, along with those who stand out against the others. Having the opportunity to win up to full-tuition for college is an amazing opportunity for many students across America and if in twenty years I had the choice to award the 17-year-old me the Bruce Fishkin Scholarship, I most definitely would. I believe I greatly qualify for this life-changing award. This amount of money I could potentially earn will not only give me less stress about paying off student-loans, but will allow me to excel in my college work.…

“ If you don’t get a full ride scholarship you cannot go to the college of your choice.” My mother has been telling me that since I was in middle school. I would think to myself how hard can it be to get a full ride. Now I’m a senior in high school with no full ride scholarship even though throughout high school I kept my grades up and I even played basketball in hope of a scout would come to my small charter school and discover my talent but that didn’t happen either.…

Coming to America as an immigrant was not simple especially when there's lot of differences from eating to how people think and interact with others on daily basis. It was a big transition not only for me but for my entire family and getting adjusted to the American vibes was difficult. My father was the first one to come here all the way from India in search of a job, and then when situation improved we ended up moving here as well. I started schooling as an 8th grader which was like jumping in the midst of an ocean with no one to help you. The social life, making friends proved very tough for me especially coming from a totally different background with cultural and traditional differences that no one understood which continued in high school as well.…

My father died when I was 13 years old and as a result, my mother is now my household’s sole provider. Her paycheck covers our basic necessities and leaves very little left over for my college fund. I have worked very hard my high school career to cultivate both impressive grades and extracurricular activities. First day of freshman year I already intimately understood that if I wanted to go to college, I would have to get scholarships and grants. My mother earns too much to qualify for aid but not enough to pay for my tuition.…

Due to the fact that I am the first child to attend college the process and expenses of college have been a surprise to both my parents and I. There will never be enough words to fully express my utmost gratitude for receiving this award when I truly needed it most. Being raised in a single parent household and having little money growing up has made me appreciate every single thing that I am given. For the past year and a half, money has been immensely tight and making ends meet has not been easy, especially since my mother’s hours were cut at her job. There was always this lingering question in the back of our minds as to whether or not would be able to pay for another semester at La Salle.…

While college is a vital part of my future plans of earning a bachelor’s degree in both finance and risk management, it is also extremely expensive! God has blessed me with amazing parents. My Dad is self-employed and a 33 year member of the Arkansas National Guard while my Mom is a special education teacher. They have always planned to help with the financial burden of college as long as I earn good grades, maintain any scholarships that I may receive and keep a part time job, but I need scholarships to assist with their effort. My family may be “rich” in love, but not especially rich in “finances”.…

My grandpa once told me, “the passion you find in life will ultimately reveal your purpose.” His inspirational words still linger with me till this day and I have always found myself wanting to live the life he spoke of. However, it wasn’t until I went to my local courthouse as a job shadowing experience that I realized the passion he described. This experience made me see that I have a passion of wanting to understand why crime occurs in our society and how to fix these issues. For this reason I chose to be a student at both Elizabethtown Community and Technical College and Western Kentucky University completing a double major or double B.A., in Criminology and Sociology.…

Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education”. Growing up I always loved going to school and learning new material. My parents constantly encouraged my sister and I to obtain a college education following high school. Surrounding myself with friends who supported that decision made receiving a college education an even bigger drive because we shared the same goal.…
