It was the beginning of junior year. Frantically, I was doing research upon research to try and discover what it was I wanted to go to college for. “What is my purpose on this earth?” I thought to myself. This was a question that haunted me for months. What exactly is my purpose? After getting to lead a cheer and dance camp for kids, a door opened and my purpose became clear; I was going to become a teacher. On day one of this camp, there was a spark. I knew I loved working with children and loved watching them take what they learned and show it off. Ever since that little spark, I have a burning passion for teaching.
When I look back to my elementary years, this camp is always one of the first things that comes to my mind. I remember being in a group with my friends, laughing and dancing around. The leaders would walk around, get to know us, and play ice breaker games with us. I was so intrigued by them; I knew I wanted to be one of them someday. Something I never understood when I was

The leaders of this camp love to see male and female children in camp because, like some in society would say, dance and cheer is not only for girls. The goal is to get whoever involved, male or female, because it could become a real hobby for them in their future. Society might say that cheer and dance should only be for females, but the leaders are changing that. More and more males have signed up for this camp every year, and they love it! Leaders of the camp can definitely see this great change. Overall, this camp has not only helped kids learn how to cheer and dance, but it has also helped kids learn communication skills. They can use these skills in all walks of life, which is why this camp is beneficial for these

So, when I was too old to be a camper there, the high schoolers will be assisting the counselors to do their job, and I was given the chance to experience to every grade level and how every grade behaves and interacts with one another, and every time I was in a group of campers they always listened and were enthusiastic in my presence. I was excited to find out that the first day of the week that the campers truly liked me, and it has directed me to become friendlier to people and granted me with improved social skills. Working with kids is much different than working with adults, children are often more energetic and less likely to retain information you present to them. In math class I had failed a couple of tests throughout the year.…

Learning about the government, playing sports, meeting new people, and staying at a college for an entire week was a great experience for me at Boys State. On my way to the camp, I was anxious to arrive because I heard from previous campers that they had a great time. When I got there my thoughts had slightly changed, but I was still impressed. My experience at the 2016 Mississippi Boys State camp at Ole Miss was a life altering event because I was preparing for the change from high school to college, living away from home, and developing new friendships.…

Wanting something more for myself, my future, and the rest of my life. Deciding how to push myself on my own wasn't impossible, but it was a struggle. Being a first generation college student in my family makes me want to become the best I can be, not only to show my family that I can do it, but myself. This predicament is quite unsuitable, as when I was a child I didn't know what to do. I really never understand the purpose of education until I became a freshman in High School.…

After talking with several of the counselors at the end of camp, I learned that there are things that have been done for the past several years that the campers along with the counselors do not enjoy. My ultimate goal for camp is to create an environment that the campers want to come back to. Equally and almost more importantly, I need to create an environment that the counselors enjoy and want to come back to. I could not have a camp without this group of 15 to 18 year…

From the time when my tiny feet walked through the doors of elementary, teachers have always encouraged my fellow classmates and me to always do our best in order to succeed. There is an abundant amount of gratitude in my heart for the teachers that have been supportive and helpful throughout my academic success. Between the years of Pre-Kindergarten and Senior year, my ambitions and dreams have changed, as did my age. From wanting to be president (five years old), then a doctor (six years old), then a teacher (thirteen years old), and now a registered nurse (eighteen years old), always having a constant goal is what kept me going.…

I was removing the sweat on my forehead as I felt the heat of the sun throughout my body, I still needed to cut the neighbors grass so I pulled the string from the lawn mower and started to move. As a kid, I never understood why I had to cut the lawn, wash the dishes clean my room or give maintenance to the house when we could have paid someone to do it. At the time, it felt like a punishment for something I never did. My father taught me to always work for myself and give the extra mile when it seems pointless; later in life, I had the opportunity to test myself.…

My understanding of intellectual disabilities has expanded because now I am able to relate the specifics from our textbook to experiences I have had while helping at Younglife’s Capernaum camp, for special needs individuals. I was surprised to read in our textbook that limited intellectual ability is defined as a score of 70 or less on intelligence testing. The Capernaum camp experience is for anyone with a disability, whether physical or intellectual, and the range of issues spans greatly when we are at camp, because so many regional groups come during the same period of time. A couple of times a year I am the camp nurse for the group, and the camp is about an hour away.…

Imagine a student who wanted to go to her dream college. She spent nearly every waking second of her high school career doing homework, and sleep was placed on the back-burner in order to have more time to study for tests such as the ACT and SAT. Fortunately, she is accepted into her dream college; however, she receives no grants and only $2,000 in loans. Her parents, an elementary school teacher and high school headmaster, are required to pay the additional costs of college – $58,000, nearly triple what the Free Application for Federal Student Aid calculator estimated. This is the story of Katie Hutchins, a Georgia high school senior, who had to pass on the opportunity of studying pre-med at the University of California, simply because she could not afford the expensive college.…
