Opportunity is gift we’ve forgotten how to utilize. I was born in Nigeria, a western african nation riddled with internal struggle, a corruption, and turmoil. Life there was completely different, namely in the fact that we lacked the same opportunities most Americans enjoy. In Nigeria it was common to see students spend the little money they had to receive an education that would amount to practically nothing. Merit did not allot you credit, that was earned by having connections. I realized this year that I wasn’t only blessed by the fact that I was able to receive an education in America, I also blessed by the fact that I able to clearly see what I wanted to do with my life.
I spent many years exploring, trying to discover myself. I took part in clubs like DECA, Junior achievement, and Chess. I went to volunteer events, sponsorships, and committed hundreds of hours to research. One of my proudest moments was when I was selected to compete in the academic decathlon competition representing my school. I participated knowing that I would have to study for something that would not be directly reflected in any application but I thought it would be fun. So I decided to dedicate my life to medical research, specifically cost effective medicine. I want to create more methods to diagnose and treat illnesses so people from impoverished nations can receive affordable medical care and experience a higher quality of life. This desire is driven heavily by my own background but inspired by the generosity and selflessness I encountered in the United States.
