We would go straight to the children’s section and I would wait patiently by her side as she piled book after book into my arms. Despite financial difficulties, my mom made sure that I became acquainted with her favorite childhood authors, and although a generation divided us, the tales of Judy Blume, Beverly Cleary and Shel Silverstein engulfed my childhood just as much as hers.

I’m a member of the Global Honors Program, Phi Sigma Pi, Sigma Tau Delta, Lambda Pi Eta, Phi Kappa Phi and AAUW, as well as a staff writer for the Eagle Eye, an editor for The Crucible, and a mentor for the Communication department. I am also a student worker at the HOPE Center. Even with all of these other commitments, I’ve maintained a 3.883 GPA over the course of my college career.

Now that I am more than halfway through my college education, I’ve begun to think about where I’d like to go in the future. Recently I’ve started thinking about working in public relations for a women’s center. This would allow me to combine all of my passions into one fulfilling career. Of course, it’s my Secret English Major Dream to one day write children’s books about cocky kids who are scared inside and underdogs who save the day, just like the books I read when I was

She finished the Anne of Green Gables series when she was eleven, praising them so highly that I just had to try them. I didn’t get past the second book. Most of the books I enjoyed were categorized by my mom as “junk books.” I explained to myself that if I had to stop after every sentence and locate a word in the dictionary, reading wouldn’t be very fun for me, a middle school girl.…

For as long as I can remember, every teacher I have ever had made us share with the class what we wanted to be when we grew up. As a group, we would sit in a large circle and take turns sharing how we wanted to spend our adult lives. Some would be squirming in their chair, anxiously awaiting their turn to blurt out their lifetime goal. I, however, would be intensely listening to everyone else 's answers. Eventually, I would hear one that I could piggyback on and agree for the moment that I might want to do that too.…
